I'm curious how you carry your pipes with you on trips? I have two main pipe bags, a MrPyer 4 pipe canvas bag (https://a.co/d/883ZSp8) that has pouches for two tins or pocket jars, a couple of compartments for pipe cleaners and accessories, and a leather strap that doubles as a pipe rest for longer trips and a Scotte pleather pipe bag (https://a.co/d/4PKfkqb) with a pleather tobacco pouch and some pockets for pipe cleaners and accessories for day trips. They both work well, I think I like the MrPyer better, the leather tobacco prep pad and the Peterson pipe bag was not included.

This is the first of a few sampler passes we'll be doing. @Hawks thought it would be fun, and I agree. He sent me a Boswell sampler of seven 1oz samples to try and then pass on to another member. I smoked a bowl of each and there is still plenty leftover. Should be able to handle 7-8 people, maybe more. I've already asked some people and they were up for it so it's officially on. Once we have our list we can make up an order that saves the most time.

I think this first time will be a trial. If it works out well, they have a fall sampler and an English sampler. After that we'll figure something out if there is interest in doing more. Dont add any tobacco to the box, we'll just run what comes in the sampler for now.

We can share our thoughts on each tobacco, good or bad, and try out blends we may never had thought of or knew about.

Rules:
Good trader's list, 50 posts, etc.
Dont add anything to the box, for now.

The taste I'm getting is a soapish one. Very strong at first light, then fades a bit but is present throughout the bowl.
When mixed with the sweet/floral notes....It's wonderful to me.

So what leaf would cause this?
I assume an Oriental?
Looking to find other blends with this type of profile.

I got to thinking about pipe smoking. It can be an intricate hobby, both frustrating and rewarding depending on if one is "doing it right". There are a lot of little things that go into it. I'd like to share a couple things I've learned, and encourage the rest of y'all to do so as well.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert, just a guy who likes to smoke, and I'd like this to be each individual telling what they've learned.

I'll start us off with 2 things I've learned:

Firstly, for the folks with military experience. Push the pipe cleaner in from the mouthpiece, and never pull it back in that direction. That may sound like a no-brainer, but for someone who's spent a few thousand hours sitting in the hall outside the arms room cleaning weapons until the armorer decides you've spent enough time and he'll start accepting weapons, well, it may be a habit to scrub that pipe cleaner back and forth. Doing so will bring foul tasting oils out to the mouthpiece. Bleah.

Second. Pipes will affect your taste for quite awhile. If you're planning to smoke a cigar in the evening, give at least a few hours since your last pipe. How long depends on your pipe tobacco. Doing it the other way around, cigar first & pipe later seems to work fine.

So, what has anyone else learned that we might want to know?
.

Ran across this video on another forum and thought I'd share it, Mark Ryan from Daughter's and Ryan talking about Perique. Mark bought one of the Perique factories and is keeping this tobacco going.

I found an interesting tidbit about cigars starting at about 1:18:00 which starts out talking about tobacco mellowing and getting darker as it ages. Mark explains that tobacco should be aged three years at the factory before selling, that it goes through two sweats a year (of ammonia) and therefore should go through six sweats. He mentioned that the cigar guys were selling immature tobacco that hadn't been fully aged to the younger guys because the ammonia drives the nicotine into the bloodstream faster, giving you a kick in the pants. Mark comes from a wine background which is where he got his palate.

Hope you find it interesting, anyone try any Daughters and Ryan tobacco and find something good?

Ok bear with me here. I’ve amassed a small array of tobacco. Approximately, 150 jars of tobacco I’ve purchased and from generous gifting from y’all on this forum. Again thank you! @Hawks @Amos_Umwhat @Stubble @Rdp77

All my opened tobacco has been jarred as well as my tobacco that was vacuum sealed in Mylar bags. Packed like a pipe with a small amount of space at the top and sealed tightly. My unopened tobacco remains in the original tins.

Everything is stored in climate controlled office with no direct sunlight. Everything is labeled and dated accordingly. Stored in dark office except when using my office.

First off what do you guys on this forum do for your cellaring process? Anyone go further by adding your jars to a tuppedore or is that overkill? Do you keep your aged tobacco in complete darkness? How often do you check lid tightness? Etc etc. Appreciate your input.

I'm curious, anyone smoking Dunhill pipes? I look at them, sometimes really hard looking, but I've yet to pull the trigger on one. Can't quite get past the price tag. Too often it looks like they're asking .$500 for a $125 pipe. Can they really be that much better?

When I was stationed in Germany and smoked cigarettes I'd sometimes buy the Dunhill cigarettes. They were very good. At that time a pack of cigarettes would last me 2 - 4 weeks, so I didn't consider the price prohibitive. But most of the Dunhill pipes that catch my eye are going for $500 - $700. That's too high.

Anyway, any Dunhill pipers?

I'm getting my pipes ready for MMM (March Meerschaum Madness), here's the before picture. Left to right I have a meer bowl for my Falcon pipe I picked up from PipesDepot on eBay, the next one is a figural sultan meer that I picked up as an estate pipe from Sorringowl & Sons. I dropped this one and cracked the tenon on the stem and replaced it with a stem with a smaller diameter. I recently bought a larger stem, but ended up breaking off a piece of the shank of this pipe trying to install it without replacing the fitting in the stummel. I have glued the piece back on with super glue, we'll see how it holds up. Next is my newest pipe, a Townsman Billiard Crater African Block Meerschaum Pipe from Royal Meerschaum that I haven't smoked yet, and finally an AKB Lattice Bent Dublin from Smoking Pipes.

I forgot to take a picture of my meerschaum lined Carey Magic Inch pipe, I'm not sure that I'll smoke it for MMM.
