The CAO Flathead 642 piston,

from a cigar line inspired by the muscle cars of generations past. As I slid it's pantella form out of the wrapper, visions of Bel Airs and Box Novas toeing up to the line came to mind, their engines rumbling with the "rub-ta-dub-lub" broken rhythm only a lumpy cam can produce. The silver on blue band against the chocolatey dark wrapper hits the eye like the look of a well aged ragtop against chrome trim over a midnight blue metal flake paintjob.

The aroma of leather, like a lovingly cared for interior entices the nostrils, as the sweet molasses like scent makes you realize it's not the car's interior you smell, but the seat cover on the passenger side. She's a beauty in a leather jacket and the classic hotpants of the time. The gleam in her eye and the rumble of the engine assures you that you're in for a good time.

Lighting this stick is like revving to 3600RPM and dumping the clutch. Notes of moist earth and nuts hit the palette and throw you back in your seat from the g-forces, but it's the sweetness of raisins and currant that dominate with the hint of leather reminding you of that gleeful young lady in the passenger seat. First gear is winding out.

Second gear. Notes of toasted bread emerge and combine with walnut or pecan like the engine's work heating dual glasspack mufflers under the rapid acceleration. Again, you're pushed back into your seat as the woody tones of hickory and apple wood emerge. The raisins and leather of that sweet young lady is still there by your side, but it's the roar of the engine that dominates now.

Third gear. The toast, nuts and wood dominate like the engine screaming, building up to the grand finale. The lines in the road and fenceposts are nothing but a blur now as you hurtle towards the finish line. The cigar is getting a bit hot now, but that's expected at this point in the race. The stronger tones of the nuts and wood overpower the sweetness like the symphony of the engine, gearbox and road nearly drowns out the delight of the lass in the passenger seat. But make no mistake, she's still with you. You fly across the finish line, and of course, you're the winner with this cigar!

If you're looking for a full flavor cigar with a wide spectrum of flavor notes, this is it. Strap yourself in and get ready for the ride of your life. But never fear, this run will definitely last longer than a nine second quarter mile, and you always win the race and the girl at the end.

His score was a 66.

I would have given it a solid 91.

Well , maybe everyone else will stay away from them so I can buy them up… but that’s weird , they are sold out ….

As most of you know most of my cigars are from 2013 or earlier. Over the past few months I have been smoking more and more of them, some with great success and some absolute duds. Here I will post a brief summary of the cigar I smoked. It will only entail if it held up over time or has gone flat on a 1-5 scale. 5 will equal still holding its flavor and 1 absolutely flat. I will add if the cigar has kept/lost is profile (IE Nicaraguan spice/pepper bomb, “Connecticut twang”, Cameroon sweetness) on the same 1-5 scale and add a little about the cigars blend to give an idea of what blends tend to hold up or not. This is not a review of the cigar. I’m simply trying to help give people an idea of what tends to hold up or flatten out after 7+ years. I’m no expert by any means but I hope I can help inform on what cigars/blends keep their flavor and profile. Any questions I can answer I would love to try.

All cigars kept at 65rh using Boveda with temperature ranging from 64-70F in VinoTemp Wineador. Air circulated often and shelves rotated a few times a year.

I have ordered from cigars.com before now, and it was a fine experience. Whether some new law went into effect, I do not know, but now they require age verification, and it is horrible! I don't mind taking steps to stop minors from accessing tobacco products, but this was not acceptable.

I ordered some cigars to be shipped to my father for his birthday. The cigars.com website asked me some questions to determine my age. I answered them and it said they could not verify and that I needed to deal with the Veratad website to verify my age. Fine. I go there and do what they asked, including uploading a photo of my driver's license.

I later get an email saying they could not verify my age, with no explanation in the email. I call cigars'com and I am told that the recipient's age also has to be verified, so I go to Veratad and do the same for my father, after having asked him to send me a photo of his dirver's license to upload to Veratad (which ruined the surprise factor of the gift, BTW).

I then get an email saying they could not verify my age, with no explanation in the email. I again call cigars.com and am told that my father's verification cannot come from the same email as mine. They say that my dad has to just send them an email with the order #, a photo of his license, and Age Verification in the subject line.

I have my father send the email. I then get an email saying they could not verify my age, with no explanation in the email. I again call cigars.com. and this time they say that an email is not sufficient and that my father has to log into the Varatad site and upload his info and license directly.

My father does that. By this time, his birthday is long past. No email is received. I get a warning from cigars.com that my order will soon expire if age is not verified. So, I call them, ask to speak to a supervisor, and explain my situation and that if the order is not approved and shipped today, I will cancel it. They finally, after some checking, agreed and approved the order.

2 weeks and all of those hoops do not make for an experience I will ever wish to repeat.

Long name but surprisingly decent cigar; I really hadn't placed much faith in it. Nicaragua wrapper, Ecuador Sumatra binder, and Honduras and Nicaragua filler. Granted I was drinking a River City root beer while smoking, I got some flavors of vanilla, brown sugar, and even a little bourbon. All in the second half of the cigar. The first half wasn't anything memorable. Intention is to have another go and if I can pick up the same flavors I might buy another fiver and let sit a year or so. Remember kids, if she has an apple, she has a banana. 'Til next time.

Most of these are down the middle medium.

In order from best to good (left to right):

Miami Maduro (blue tube pink cap) - multiple box worthy. MSA, Sumatra. Toro. Smokes heavier than medium, full flavor, long smoke, 2+ hours.

Misticos (no tube) - multiple box worthy. Cameroon. Robusto. Beautiful cigar, another long smoke. I burned a vacation hour one morning to nub it.

Lotus (green/white). Box worthy. E Habano, Criollo. Lancero full flavor. Draw was slightly snug but just fine.

Triunfante (yellow) - Box worthy. E Shade. Toro. Mild, but punches above its weight class in flavor intensity. Nica fillers give it some palate zing. Not your grandpa's Connecticut.

Solstice (red) - 5er worthy. Sumatra. Corona-ish. Good cigar. I'm persnickety about Sumatra cigars and this one is okay for me. I enjoyed it overall and I'll buy more, occasionally.

El Cubano (red, white, blue). 5er worthy. USA Connecticut. Toro. Very good, stronger than the yellow one, but you get that weird Connecticut bitter grassy thing at the bottom. Still good Vitamin N content for a morning smoke.

Pepe (purple) - single worthy. MSA and broadleaf. Box presses Toro. Got knocked down because it had a wonky burn and a loose draw. Also I found it weird and off-putting that an MSA wrapper with a broadleaf binder had such mildness. Burn issue could have been a one-off. I'll give it another try.

Miami Art Deco (pink tube/blue cap) - single worthy. Toro. Medium body with medium flavors. Not bad if you're into med/med, but there are other choices that I will go with more often.

Disco (green) - single worthy. Gordo. E Habano. Full Vitamin N, med flavors. If this darn thing was Toro, it would probably shoot right to the top of the list. The vitola did enough to mute the flavors enough to knock it down to third or fourth in flavor. The rest of the penalty is just because of the size. Good golf smoke, I'll buy more.

Renegade (orange) - meh...will give it one more shot. MSA. Box press 5.5x56. I didn't watch this one at all and it might be because I smoked it at the shop and it might have been very humidified. Size is weird. Box press burned wonky. Also went from very loose to very tight. Sort of like marrying a stripper. Flavors were also very cute , might be an indication of over-humidification. will give it another shot and put it in my humidor for a few weeks to see if that changes anything.

If you know, you know.

Tonight I smoked a NLMTHA from Steve Saka. Pre light the cigar was a little thin in the hand and felt under humidified. Initial light was easy…maybe a little too easy.
Right up front I’m blasted with flavors of saddle leather and unripe pecans. A subtle undertone of cinnamon bun icing ( not the homemade kind…the cheap out of a can stuff) brings a nice sweetness.
The second third brings about notes of overly dried prunes and burning pine needles. The sweetness has gone away and is replaced with a whisp of white seedless grapes that have been left in the refrigerator too long. Burn and construction have been above par.
The final third brings about a transition back to leather but this time more of a black leather like on a riding jacket. A slight hint of Hungarian paprika mixed with Mexican oregano and Vidalia onion becomes prevalent. Construction and burn are still above par however the cigar did burn my fingers which definitely lowers the quality of the experience.
Final score : 78

It's time to relax after dinner on your average summer evening. I grab the Diesel Unlimited by AJ Fernandez out of the humidor and sit out by the pool. Like any summer evening, a storm is brewing. The oily ligero wrapper is dark like the approaching squall, but not black. Like the storm, it's not ominous enough to cause alarm, but enough to promise an exciting experience. The earthy peppery floral aroma hits the senses like the warm air rushing in to feed the growing tempest.

The first storm watch is issued. I light this stick with the excitement of the first flashes of lightning in the distance. That first strike hits with the tingle of pepper followed by a wave of aged leather like the rumble of thunder in the distance. Mild hints of chocolate emerge, billowing with an oakey note that rise up and forward the way the towering thunderheads ride the convective currents and blow out ahead of the storm.

The second third hits like the squall line. The light drizzle that was the pepper and leather is now a steady rain, strong and pronounced. The chocolate pushes like the first winds of the front, gusting and developing a coffee like character. The thunder and lightning come more frequently now, like the oak tones growing and developing a full and mature essence of a charred bourbon barrel, like one would taste in a single malt.

By the final third, we are completely engulfed, surrounded by the hammering and bursting of thunder, lightning, wind and rain. The pepper is a full and floral white pepper with a hint of honeysuckle. This mixes in waves with dark coffee, toast, earthy leather and Brazil or macadamia nuts like the alternating waves of wind and rain. But the storm is winding down. The draw is becoming hard now, like how the massive output of the storm eventually chokes out the inflow and cuts off its energy supply. As the chaos winds down, we're left with a lingering toasty chocolate note and a hint of something faintly eucalyptus-like in the diminishing floral character. The cigar, like the storm extinguishes itself, and leaves us in peace with fond memories of the experience.

This is how a full flavored, heavy bodied cigar should be. And it's earned a permanent home in my humidor, for whenever I'm in need of the perfect storm.

Cigar Aficionado has not updated its FAQ on travel to Cuba since November 2017. A lot has changed in the last three years, and none of it good for U.S. citizens wanting to visit Cuba. The most recent Trump Administration rules, announced October 13, rolled back a key element of legal travel to Cuba that affects Cigar Aficionado’s U.S. readers as much as any other—no more purchases of Cuban cigars and rum to bring home, from wherever you in the world. Here are the most up-to-date answers based on the U.S. Treasury Department’s page explaining Cuba Sanctions.

I’m an American citizen. Can I still buy Cuban cigars and rum?

Yes. Americans can still buy Cuban cigars and rum for personal consumption when traveling in Cuba or any country where Cuban cigars are sold. They are no longer allowed, however, to bring those purchases back to the United States. They are also prohibited from importing them by any method into the United States.

Can I still bring Cuban cigars and rum back to the U.S.?

No. A traveler can purchase Cuban cigars and rum while outside the United States, but no Cuban alcohol or tobacco product may be brought back to, or imported into, the United States. Other Cuban products may be included in accompanied baggage but only as items for personal use such as gifts. Those products may not be sold.

So i have to wonder how close customs will be inspecting especially with the Holidays coming up.

Buyer beware.

I'm a noob. But I also think I have a decent palate (it's the only one I've got, so I'm partial to it), and I know what I like. Even though I make a living communicating in various forms, I'm not going to claim to be a professional writer. Neither am I going to attempt to have a set rubric for my reviews. So some of these might get kind of weird. I'm going to include the random thoughts I have about smoking and life which I jot down during my smoke sessions.

Okay, enough with the rationale behind starting another review thread, time to get to it. I hope you enjoy. I know I will.

I have looked through the forums and have come up empty handed. Anyways, this was one of my first sticks...many many moons ago. I was out of the hobby for nearly 4 years and am now able to get back into it. I remember really enjoying this stick way back, but I've not heard anyone talk of these on the forums here. Also, I've not seen them in a sampler pack or on sale here at CCOM. I've read the reviews on the Onyx Reserve purchase page, but I am curious as to what people here on the forums think of these. I'm interested in purchasing a few (maybe a box) and would like some 'fresh' feedback if possible. Thanks.

Well tonight I had my first stick by Alec Bradley and I must say that if his others are anything like this, Gurkha has a real competitor in my book. Let me start by saying that we were actually able to schedule "Cigar Night" for the first time in a few weeks. I've had some cigars during that time, but this was when all the guys could sit around, shoot the bull and just enjoy some cigars. In anticipation of this, I looked through my humi and narrowed down my choices to either a La Gloria Cubana Series R or the Pryme. After reviewing the write ups on CCOM, I chose the Pryme because it just sounded interesting.
So anyway, fast forward to smoking time. I opened the humi and pulled out the stick (man I love that smell). Looking at the dressing on this stick alone is just impressive. It had a colorful gold trimmed band and then a cedar wrap with a gold ribbon. Removing the cedar wrap reveals a nicely constructed cigar with a uniform, golden brown appearance. The wrapper had some minute veining that was almost unnoticable. The wrapper was also slightly dry but probably due to my location and storage rather than construction. Because of the dryness, the Ecuadorian wrapper started to peel ever so slightly but not enough to detracvt from the smoke.
The flavor is where this smoke really won me over. It was very complex and even with my untrained pallet I detected no less than 4 distinct flavors. I couldn't necessarily identify them but I could tell the difference between them and I must say it was very flavorful.
Smoking characteristics were excellent. The burn was even throughout except for one small spot that required a slight retouch to get it even again but then it burned even the rest of the way down. The first ash didnt fall until almost an inch and a half into it. The draw was excellent, not hard at all but just enough resistance. The smoke was cool all the way down to the last couple inches where it started to warm some. The smoke was thick but not so much as to be overwhelming and as before, full of flavor. The flavor built for about the first two inches and then it came alive as I hit the sweet spot and never stopped. It just kept building from there and then the finish was amazing. It's like the flavor kept building and then about two and a half inches from the end, it plateaued and stayed there until the end about an hour and 20 minutes after I began.
My overall impression was that this was a fantastic smoke and a definite finger burner for me. I will certainly be buying more of these and recommend them for anyone, newbie and afficionado alike. In my opinion, a must have in anyone's humidor

Appearance and Construction 12/15
Flavor 24/25
Smoking Characteristics 23/25
Overall Impression 32/35

Total 91/100

I'm curious what anybody else thinks of these and for the more experienced out there, are there any recommendations for similar smokes. Let me know, I'm anxious to hear.

I have it paired up with the moist-n-aire unit that came with the tower. The moist-n-aire comes with a **** ranco analog humidistat that doesn't effectively control the unit. For the past couple of years. I've just run the moist-n-aire on a timer with varying degrees of results. Constantly fiddling with it during winter and summer months to adjust the timer.

This thing has two plugs, one for a humidifier, which is my moist-n-aire, and the other for a dehumidifier which I obviously don't use.

This Wi-Fi unit has an accompanying app that lets you control it from your phone. The downside of this humidistat, other than it's Chinese garbage, is that it requires a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection, and I had to turn off band steering and create two separate networks, one for the 2.4 and one for the 5.

Once you get it hooked up, you can control all of the settings in the app.

You can also control them on the device but it is clunky. The app is much better.

One of the cool features is the RH adjustment. I guess the Chinese knew they were going to make a crappy device so they put that field in there to account for inaccuracy in their sensor. It has audible alarms for Rh that goes above or below percentages that you can set.

The app also allows you to monitor your RH through your phone. It does graphs and exports CSV files.

Last time I tried to buy a cigar Oasis 3.0, it was 300 bucks and out of stock everywhere. This Wi-Fi unit cost me 52, and you can get it for 42 on Amazon without the Wi-Fi stuff.

To completely replace the cigar oasis, you'd have to have a couple of other things. Some sort of box or container like a tupperware with holes near the top, and a plastic plug-in fan that would blow on that water. You could do it like cigar oasis and fill it up with beads. A 12 oz bag of beads goes for like 9 bucks on Amazon. So literally for $60, you can build yourself the biggest cigar oasis in the world.

For most of you guys with coolers, doesn't matter. But for a guy who has converted a walk-in closet to a humidor or has a couple of big cabinets or something, this is a pretty good option.

Despite it being Chinese, I recommend.

I should be working but...

While I do not have as refined a palate as many of you and I usually categorize my cigars into two columns, good and not good, I am going to give this a go. I purchased a box of Havoc before coming online here and obtaining more knowledge, mostly because I thought the band was cool and I had good luck with AJF cigars. At least, most of my experience had been with AJF blends. Come to find out, AJF blends are simply everywhere! Some I like and some I do not. This particular offering has been sitting in my tupperdor for around four months. It lit easily, burned well, and has great construction. This vitola is the belicoso, 6x54. A year ago all I wanted to purchase were the larger ring gauges, now I find I am leaning more toward the 52 and smaller sizes. From my scope, this belicoso performed quite well in function. Flavor wise, the cigar was okay. It began with a little spiciness, that I am assuming is the pepper quality that I read about. Couldn't tell you what kind of pepper, just that the smoke was a bit bitey on the lips and tongue. In addition to the pepper was a slight bitterness that continued until the middle of the cigar, at which point things sweetened considerably and held so to the last third when the bitterness returned. The bitterness prevailed over all else considerably but not to the degree of a Ghurka. Almost to the nub, about the length of a thumb left, the cigar had gone out and I did not see fit to relight. The decision was mainly based upon my fatigue and less upon the cigar. The advertising review states, "...medium-to-full bodied Nicaraguan puro, leaning more towards the medium bodied side..." and with this I can agree. Slightly stronger than most of the medium cigars I have smoked but didn't lay me out with nicotine. The biggest con for me has to do with the band. There are three that nearly cover the entire cigar. All three had too much glue applied, removing them was a pain, and slightly tore the wrapper. All in all, the price point for the cigar feels pretty spot on. Eleven come in a box and I won't mind smoking the rest but I won't mind not relighting them either.

Cheers,
Chris

Store while I was waiting to receive the units and I could see that these are Bluestream Sensors that go for $50 on Amazon, but the Boveda app has been customized so that you log into a Boveda account and you can easily set it up to purchase more Boveda humidification packets when needed. It appears to be a good sales tool, probably explaining the low price.

You have the choice of a 1 point calibration with the included 75% kit or you can do a more accurate 2 point calibration with a 32% and a 75% packet. I chose to do the 1 point calibration with the included kit. You get to play with the app and exit the app during calibration and one of my sensors appeared to be running high (about 78%) during calibration but once it's complete both sensors were reading 75%, automatically calibrated with no need to remember an offset.

The sensors measure temperature and humidity and you can enable a shock sensor which is said to run down the battery faster. The battery is said to last about a year and a spare is included with the sensor along with some velcro if you chose to mount it instead of tossing it on top of your cigars like I did. The sensors store 10 days of data which is downloaded to your phone when you connect and also to Boveda. They use Bluetooth so you can't remotely access them unless you have a second phone that you leave at home connected to the sensors, then you can log in with another phone remotely and check on your sensors, if desired. I have a couple of spare phones around so I may try this later.

The Bluetooth appears to be Low Energy, but the range on these seems to be pretty good. I'm not sure if I can reliably connect to both at the same time since my Winedor is in a separate room than my box bin, but I might be able to put the phone somewhere where they connect to both.

I finished calibration and deployed the sensors, so far I'm impressed, this seems to be an easy way to keep an eye on things. I have several digital hygrometers that I never look at, I'll be much more likely to check on things with these and I can look at the history to monitor the temperature swings in my wine cooler and in my box bin.

Howdy just joined the forum! Love my cigars, and try quite a few. Ordered some of the Acid Def Sea smokes, a buddy likes the infused cigars and I’d been buying some of the acid and Drew Estate smokes to share. Got these Def Seas and wow! They say they’re infused but don’t taste it like the others…. Rich, smooth, good cigar! Smoking one now with a Modelo and a margarita as chasers and really pleasurable! Not as light as a Connecticut wrap, not like a nice oily Maduro but so enjoyable to me. Two thumbs up.
