Setting up a coolador

Allen1965Allen1965 Posts: 1
I've read a lot about cooladors from storing your sticks in cedar boxes etc. I want to know if I can buy Spanish cedar and cut it to the length I need and hot glue it to the sides and bottom will this work as well as buying used boxes I would have to get from my brick and morder store.

I would suggest just buying cigar trays and using cigar boxes.
+1 this will be the best method

Welcome to the forum @Allen1965 I've had great luck storing my cigars in cigar boxes in my cooler. Get your self some humidity beads and a good hygrometer and your good to go. Lots of great people on this forum that are very knowledgeable and love helping out us new guys :)

I just threw some boveda's in, and never even worried about a certain qty of cedar. The boxes are cedar, but singles are in plastic bins. Humidity has never fluctuated.

Yeah cedar isn't even necessary. A cooler will maintain without it

    Agree with the guys.
But if you really want the cedar trays, like @miller65rod stated, I found some on Amazon for a reasonable price. Just search "cedar humidor tray"
    About $15 each.

As many said Bovedo, beads, kitty s h i t etc. and nothing is really needed other than that.

I suggest the trays and boxes for organization, plus it helps with recovery time when you keep looking at your cigar porn.  Less handling and less damage potential as well.

Now look at how many seegars u have today, now imagine how many u can stuff in there. Now go buy a second cooler because your gonna need it.

If you have a wife who doesn't agree with your hobby u got bigger problems than ?'s about wood. Just saying.

I will emphasize what has been stated.  Cedar is not necessary at all unless you want that aroma but again with the seal and stability of coolers it doesn't do much for regulating humidity like a traditional humidor.  I run 1 cooler with beads and 1 with bovedas.  Super low maintenance and always rock solid.

Agreed entirely, use a very specific type of kitty litter (will snap a pic and post later for reference), I have 15+ years worth for less than $15. I use plastic bins with cedar placed inside and some cheap cedar trays from old boxes but not because I like the look and smell and not because I need it for the coolidor. Two hygrometers to monitor rH and make sure one isnt going wonky. Bear in mind mine is just a "small" 50qt igloo but stores a lot. Would store even more if I changed layout and setup but no need for that. Here's a few pics for reference:

    @Lee.mcglynn

Just got smacked that from Brad! He suggested letting the 16's sit a bit as they are still slightly young. I had a few of the original 14's but as is par for the course, gifted them all away before smoking one lol. Brad bent over backwards to bend me over and sent me a 15 and 16 to make sure I got to actually try one of them this time HAHAHA. Smoked the Tat TAA 15' he sent me last night, DAMN that was might fine!

I'll pile on -- I started with wood humis (two of the 40 count from Ccom), and have since given them away to get some BOTLs started.

Bovedas in igloo coolers. I keep my stix organized by sorting by manufacturer and slipping them in five finger bags with the tops unzipped. Boxes go on the bottom, stacks of fivers on top. I have a few hard sided herf a dors -- 5 count, 10 count, 40 count for overflow and travel.

The nice thing about Bovedas us you can recharge them in distilled. KL is even more bomb proof.

I havent had had any temp or humidity issues whatsoever. Rock steady and the cigars are in beautiful shape.

I don't know if this is brilliant or stupid, but I've been fighting a losing battle with temperature and my cigars now that summer has come, so I emptied my wood humidor into tuppedors to maintain the correct humidity (with 65 % Bovedas) and then stuck them in a cooler with an ice pack to maintain the temperatures.

We'll see how it goes.  I know a Winedor is the right answer, just not the right-now answer.

The ice will take out humidity...you need to cool the outside and not the inside

But the ice isn't in with the cigars...

Just my personal opinion but I'm not a fan of having ice packs inside my humi or cooler or wine fridge etc. I think it's really just personal preference but even putting an ice pack inside a bag you get condensation, and the ice pack does affect rH as well not just because cooler temps lower relative rH but because of the condensation and even a bit of off gassing. Before I was able to get some AC units in the house and get everything under control my cooler and humis were seeing 85-90 F temps. I put huge ice packs on top of them and then covered with a bath towel to insulate and soak up, after 8+ hrs temps dropped to mid to low 70's and I didn't have to worry about anything happening inside since I was just affecting the outside. As I said in the beginning though, really up to each person I'm simply not a fan or proponent of putting ice packs inside.

I'm thinking I should be ok with the sealed tuppedors in the cooler.

Probably so, as I said it's simply a matter of preference and when it comes to the sticks I don't like to take any chances since that's years and years of collecting as well as generosity from people I consider family etc. As with so many things related to cigars, personal preference and YMMV ;)

It's been several days here in the cooler with tuppedors and when I pulled out one of my tuppedors the hygro read 68 % at 60 F with 65 % Bovedas so I think it's working.  It's working better than the 80+ F temps I was fighting before.
