Lots of people start with a hot air popcorn popper, some use a wok or pan outdoors over flame and stir, and you can ask @peter4jc about Stir Crazy / Turbo Oven setups that make good coffee in larger batches. That's just the affordable on-ramp to a deep rabbit hole, or at least it was for me.
