Yukon Quest Contest

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but why would anyone want to start out first? doesn't that mean that their dogs have to carve a fresh path in the snow that others can follow?0
-
The trail is groomed, more or less, by volunteers using snowmobiles the month or so before the race. I've done 50 miles or so of it a few times.
The first team out doesn't really break trail all that much. Teams are passing each other all the time as well so the first team out may not be lead team for long. Weather and winds do have an effect on things as do river ice and overflows.
I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...3 -
Three and a half days in and the two lead teams are 8 miles apart, each about 430 miles down the trail. They should cross into Canada sometime today. First team that gets into Dawson City , Yukon, gets 2 ounces of gold as long as tgey complete the rest of the race.I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...2

Like Timex, it just keeps on ticking. That's a part of the hazards of endurance dog sled running. Mushers have a list if required gear they have to carry during the race to help ensure their and their dog's safety. With technology today the race officials know within a couple feet where everyone is. Wasn't like that just a few years agi and losing the trail meant maybe a couple days before you were found.I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...1

The 4 front runner teams have all reached Dawson City, Yukon where they have a mandatory 36 hour stop. Dawson City is just over halfway down the trail. It's day 6 with just under 500 miles to Whitehorse.I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...2

8 days, 4 hours. Lead team is 764 miles along with the 2nd place team a couple miles back. Looking like it'll be right around the 10 day mark.I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...0

It's going to be close. @VegasFrank, @TBonz and @IndustMech are all right there. The leader has 1 checkpoint to go and is about 140 miles from the finish line. He's moving along at 7 mph or so.I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...2

Brent Sass has won the 2020 Yukon Quest with a time of 10 days, 2 hrs, 9 minutes. @IndustMech takes the Inaugural with a pick of 10 days, 6 hrs, 30 minutes. He missed hitting it exactly by a mere 4 hrs and 21 minutes.
A tradition in dog mushing is the last team to cross the finish is awarded a Red Lantern. @CalvinAndHobo was farthest out at 14 days, 4 hrs, 4 minutes. The Red Lantern, hung off the caboose of a train, goes to Calvin.
Thanks for playing. Brothers!I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...5 -
You’re really going to make my generation worse by continuing with these participation trophies. Don’t enable us millennials, what kind of lessons are you teaching?12

Nice contest @Trykflyr_1 !3

The winner spent about 7 1/2 days actually moving on the trail. Just over 2 1/2 days were spent in checkpoints. That averages to about 5 1/2 mph for the run.I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...0

The Red Lantern is a symbol of tenacity and determination in this game. Receiving it is actually quite honorable.

The kids in the various sports leagues tried really hard, let’s give them a trophy too. I bet @Trykflyr_1 is secretly a vegan yoga instructor. Don’t do it Paul, don’t prove me right.5

Who am I to scorn tradition? Besides, who else in Iowa (motto: Math is hard) has a sled dog race inspired cigar lighter?I'm still troubled by what I did for that Klondike bar...4
