In 2016 a man walked into a Kansas City Bank and handed the teller a note. The note demanded the teller hand over money because he had a gun and would shoot her if she didn’t comply. Scared she would be shot, she handed the bewildered-looking bank robber all the money in her till. The would-be bank robber thanked the teller before walking off with about $3,000 in cash. He then proceeded to calmly walk towards the lobby, but instead of fleeing out the door, he took a seat as if he were waiting for assistance.
As the bizarre incident continued to unfold, the police were called and the bank employees were ushered out of the building. When the cops turned up at the scene, they were probably expecting a stand-off with a deranged armed bank robber, but instead what they found was a defeated looking man in his 70s, that went by the name Lawrence Ripple. When the baffled police officers asked why he did it, he looked at them and said, “all I wanted to do was to get away from my wife.”
In the days leading up to the robbery, Lawrence, who was suffering from depression from a series of heart surgeries, was feeling particularly down with his lot in life and it wasn’t helped by the constant nagging from his slightly overbearing wife. Feeling trapped between a rock and a hard place and what probably started as a thinly veiled threat, turned into the perfect solution to get away from his nagging wife: prison.
He wrote out the note that he was later to hand the teller and looked at his wife and says, “I would rather be in prison than sit here and listen to you for another minute,” before walking out the door.
Under normal circumstances, most would find a way to cool the head. Maybe go for a jog or a nice, strong drink down at the local pub. Instead, Lawrence Ripple was going to see his cry for help through in a spectacular fashion and continued onto the bank.
Did he want to go to prison to get away from his wife or was it a loud cry for help? In court, the lawyer defending him painted the situation as just that: a cry for help from a deeply depressed man. Lawrence Ripple was very remorseful of his actions and the teller from the bank asked the judge for leniency when sentencing him.
Lawrence was looking at twenty years for the offense, but in this instance, the judge acted with compassion and listened to Ripple's pleas for help and sentenced him to 7 months home confinement. Lawrence Ripple had to be escorted to his home as he pleaded for the judge to give him the twenty years.

On my way home from yoga today, I dropped in at my local B&M. They sell their emptied gar boxes for a buck. I wanted to see whether they might have some nice cedars complete with tight flanges and clasps. I have some home rolled ready to stash in the big fish cooler where I age my gars. I could use a box or two to place them in.
Picked out two. Took them to the counter. Handed the gal two bucks. She said: "I need to scan your ID."
I replied: "I'm buying two empty wooden boxes for a buck apiece. You need ID for that?"
She says: "The state says that because the boxes USED TO HOLD tobacco, I have to scan your ID."
I said: "You're going to think I'm just an old grump, but right now I am up to here with horse schmidt and I just don't have room for any more. So you have this choice: You can take two bucks for two empty boxes or you can have your empty boxes back."

I'm not saying it's the store gal's fault. She's just a proxy. That doesn't help. I am saying I am just about up to here with horse schmidt.

My lounge has two sections for empty boxes; a bunch that are free and the other are $1 each, which they, in turn, funnel to the CRA. If your store is in fact charging $1 and keeping that buck, so that they have to ring it up as a sale, I'd say that's the bigger foul. Trying to justify why they can't just give them away would be more telling than the strict adherence to the stupid rule.

I’ve been in retail for a long time now. This is what is known as SOP, Standard Operating Procedure. This is put in place to keep employees safe and companies profitable. If a company can’t keep its employees safe and stay profitable, well then there is no business. Why can’t we walk into a business and follow their rules? Don’t like the rules..... hit the bricks and go elsewhere. That’s the nice thing about free enterprise and having choices right. Why does everyone think that there is some magic button on the register that allows returns 3 years after the date of purchase, or blame the business selling the product if it’s defective? “Don’t you stand behind the product you sell?” Yes we do. That’s called a return policy, or manufactures 1 year warranty, and/or service plan. Don’t blame business for setting and or following rules set for them.
Are you a Best buy guy, Pete? I thought you might have been. Anyways, I always hated Best buys 15% restocking fee on returns. I'm sure there was a business reason for it, but I thought it was crap. All my years working in customer service / support have taught me to ask to escalate to a higher level when speaking with someone who clearly doesn't have the power to solve the problem that I'm having.
