Hawks' Simple Reviews

Read earlier about having all the things in one discussion so as not to clutter up. So, forgive the multiple discussions.
Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cuban
Long name but surprisingly decent cigar; I really hadn't placed much faith in it. Nicaragua wrapper, Ecuador Sumatra binder, and Honduras and Nicaragua filler. Granted I was drinking a River City root beer while smoking, I got some flavors of vanilla, brown sugar, and even a little bourbon. All in the second half of the cigar. The first half wasn't anything memorable. Intention is to have another go and if I can pick up the same flavors I might buy another fiver and let sit a year or so. Boy, that gives a whole new meaning to that song.

After not-so-careful review, I figure I will use this thread to write about...just write.
Since a late conversation on my first vHerf visit, I've been practicing the retrohale. I believe I have it down and am attempting to learn, now, how to do it without burning my sinus out. Managed that successfully a few times. With the advent of a new skill I believe I am starting to pick up what others have been putting down about flavor notes. It's interesting to me as until recently, I've really only been able to understand if I like the cigar or I do not. Which segues:
This last week I have been exploring Connecticut wrappers. Attempting to pick up on the creamy texture/flavor of the smoke. I've had some success and and, again, I am surprised by the cheap cigar. I feel a trend forming that I might just have a thing for cheap cigars. Remnants of my trailer park beginnings. The Black Abyss Connecticut
These have been sitting in my Tupperware containers at the bottom of the pile, receiving no attention, passed over, almost forgotten for months. To be completely candid, I loved the hell out of this smoke. Creamy texture, tasty without being too bold. I even picked up some raisin or fig. Not to say the Undercrown Shade or Nica Rustica were undesirable. I intend on buying many more of what I can find of those, but I guess I like my cigars as I like my woman. 😉 Just don't tell her, she may get jealous of the cigars.Nolite Oblivisci Peniculus Dentes

Enjoyed a Poison Dart this morning. I feel like that sentence hasn't been created too many times before. Still practicing the retrohale and whilst considering the vast expanse of space between my ears, I had a brainwave. One word. Cinnamon. Enlightenment is one step closer.

Big ups to @JGruvey
I did not want this cigar to end. I have to say, this was a top notch smoke for me. The flavor did not change down to the nub. I burnt my fingers. The retrohale did not burn me at all and I couldn't help but to send it out of my nose each puff. TYVM. I don't know how long these have been chilling in that cooler but wow, what a way to enjoy the first night of the Harvest Moon. Cheers!Nolite Oblivisci Peniculus Dentes

@Hawks I bought 300 of them after I tried my first. Cheers to @VegasFrank for introducing me to it.
Glad you enjoyed it.

Been a minute since I tried being all knowy and stuff. Reversing direction. Self-review: as it warmed more and more, I became less interested in pipe tobacco and more interested in my cigars, again. Likely because Ro isn't keen on me smoking a cigar in the house beyond just passing through. Ok, that's enough for another year and a half.

Plus, a groovy 'stache like yours goes better with a cigar than a pipe. Just sayin'...

Biorhythms. It's natural. When the leaves start to turn, pipes will call to you again.

I’m with you Chris. Pipes have been relegated to early mornings and air conditioned pipe club at the B&M.
A good cigar and the open road solve most problems.
