You put a thick pipe cleaner in the stem/shank of the pipe, fill the bowl with kosher salt and then carefully put strong alcohol in the bowl without getting it on the outside finish of the pipe. The alcohol loosens the tar and gunk in the pipe and the salt absorbs it away from the inside. If your pipe has a ghost of tobacco that you can't get rid of, this is a good way to work on it. A lot of time those ghosts live in the shank and heel of the pipe, so you should also be running some pipe cleaners or shank brushes with alcohol through the shank too.
You can use Everclear to clean your pipes, unless you live in California which bans such liquids. 151 Proof rum also works as does high proof Isopropyl alcohol.
