The first of its kind was a knife. A French mathematician patented his own design in 1828, but it was slow-working and therefore didn’t really catch on. However, another French inventor improved upon this design which we still use to this day. In 1851, further improvements on the design were patented, and started mass-production in 1857. Several variations and improvements followed with one of the most significant being invented in the early 1900s. The first ‘modern’ version was invented around 1910 and were first produced commercially in 1917.
