DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) can melt certain plastics.
DEET can ruin certain plastics, synthetic fabrics like rayon and spandex, leather, painted surfaces, and waterproof coatings by dissolving or softening them. Common items that can be damaged include plastic glasses, watch crystals, synthetic clothing, car finishes, tents, and certain gear. To prevent damage, avoid spraying DEET directly on these items and wash off any overspray or mist immediately.

DEET is a solvent that can dissolve some materials, including plastics. When DEET comes into contact with certain plastics, it can dissolve the plastic molecules, causing it to melt or become sticky.
Plastics that are particularly susceptible to melting from DEET include: polycarbonate, acrylic, nylon, vinyl, and rubber.
Therefore, it is important to avoid applying DEET to any plastic surfaces, such as eyeglasses, watch bands, or tent materials

Nice. I had to look up clerical tippet. The only tippet I knew of was used for fishing.
