Forum jumps to the bottom of the page instead of latest message.

Yesterday, I found a write-up of the issue explaining the page hasn't fully loaded before the jump to the anchor link is done, so it creeps to the bottom of the page as things load. The fix is for an admin to add some JavaScript to the backend of the forum to delay the jump to the anchor link until after the page completes loading.

I found a workaround for the problem where you end up at the bottom of the page instead of the latest post in a thread. This procedure should also work to go to the post in the thread from a search result after it overshoots the post. Hitting the refresh button on your browser doesn't work because it reloads the page instead of using the current page to jump to the anchor link. Also, hitting refresh will mark the posts on that page as read so you won't be able to jump to the latest post using the below procedures. This procedure also works when your reading your private messages. The inbox is accessed now by clicking on your avatar in the top right of the page.

On PC:
For the Brave and Chrome browsers on a PC, click on the thread and let the page load. If you're seeing the bottom of the page, click on the address bar and highlight the URL--it should highlight the URL when you click on the address bar--and then hit enter to go to the latest message. This works because the page has already been loaded so when you jump to the anchor link you don't see the page creep down as items on the page load.

On Android, DuckDuckGo Browser:
Use the same procedure above. You may need to hit the left or right arrow after highlighting the address bar before hitting enter for this to work

On Android Chrome Browser:
If your using Chrome on Android, there's added steps because when I click on the address bar it appears blank, so I have to click on the copy link icon below the address bar and then paste the link into the address bar and hit enter to jump to the latest message anchor.

On iPhone
I wasn't able to test browsers on iPhone, this is left as an exercise for the reader. Please let us know what works.

FYI, when I use the Brave browser on my PC, I'm not able to see who hit the reaction buttons, awesome, like, etc. by hovering over the reaction, but it works normally on Chrome.

    Weird. It didn't jump all the way down on this thread.

    Sometimes it doesn't, as long as the page loads fast enough. It's worked properly a handful of random times for me, usually on new threads or threads without too many images. When I went to read your reply, though, it creeped to the bottom on me so I had to employ the workaround.

    I like your workaround. For threads that have several new posts, I'd rather highlight the address bar and hit enter than scroll up and try to find where the new posts start. For threads with just a new post or two, I'll just scroll up.

    Thanks, Chris.

    My esteemed colleague @VegasFrank let me know that there's an easier way in mobile Chrome for Android. Thanks Frank!

    On Android Chrome Browser:
    If your using Chrome on Android, there's added steps because when I click on the address bar it appears blank, so I have to click on the pencil icon below the address bar which pastes the link back into the address bar and hit enter to jump to the latest message anchor.

    Where did the General Discussion link that used to be below the Preview, Save Draft, Post Comment boxes at the bottom of the page go? To get back to the general discussion threads, I have to click backwards in the browser or go back in through Community.

    See this post for how to pull up recent discussions or the categories list from the hamburger menu. I'd like to keep this thread about the page jumping to the bottom since it seems to be a nuisance for all of us.

    It seems its now going to the next new posts but then immediately scrolls to the bottom. Still just as frustrating.

    It's all about timing, the page needs to load completely before the anchor link is called, needs some Javascript added to the backend to delay the jump to the anchor until after the page fully loads.

    Hopefully they get the delay dialed in.

    No idea what you just said but I believe you. Jumping to the bottom sucks!

    yeah now that I’ve been on here for a bit it does seem to actually be fixed now. As Frank said I just had to go to each thread at least twice needle it started working how I expected. I still don’t live the new UI but I’ll get over it.

    For me, every single thread, after pushing, starts at the bottom of the page. Must scroll up ………

    Have you tried clicking on or highlighting the address bar, once it finishes loading, and then hitting enter? Scrolling up is fine for one new post, but if it's more than one, this makes it actually go to the first unread post.

    Shouldn't it just go the the first unread post like it used to?

    Yes, of course. But how many things in life 'should' but don't?

    Unfortunately, this doesn’t work for me. 🤬

    I'm using Opera. Clicking on a thread goes to the last post, not the last post I read - and it shoots down to the bottom and has a little seizure for about 0.5 - 1 second before coming to a stop.
    FYI

    @GI JOE

    If you haven't read through the threads on this issue, here's what some of us have been doing;

    Once the thread stops bouncing, you can scroll up - if I'm using my mouse, I click the wheel to engage autoscroll while it's bouncing and when it settles out, it'll be scrolling up to where I want to stop it.

    That works if it's just one or two posts that are unread. If it's more, then both on my computer and on my phone, after clicking on a thread to see unread posts, I'll highlight the address in the address bar and once it stops bouncing and settles, I'll either hit 'enter' on my computer, or on my phone (android) on the address bar that pops up.

    Hope that helps. It's not as sucky once you get used to dealing with it.
