DIscord Age Verification
Discord just announced that they will be aiming to make every user age-verify by either face scan or ID scan. Most people will likely hop away from the service, would that be likely to grow the forum? Has the forum grown in the past when other sites/services have been shut down or boycotted?

I’d be surprised if a lot of them left actually. My guess is that this moves too slowly for most of them.
If it don’t bother me, it don’t bother me. Just leave me alone.

We aren't flooded with teens here, afaik. Most can not afford a cigar smoking lifestyle and kinda look goofy sporting a stogie. If this forum initiate a face scan or photo ID I would leave simply because it creeps me out that the government is turning into a surveillance threat to liberty and requiring businesses to assist in that effort.

I don't expect it to have much impact on our forum, maybe some other adult forums might see an uptick.
It may not impact current users all that much, I'm curious to know how many existing users will be asked to photo identify their age.
For the majority of adult users, we will be able to confirm your age group using information we already have. We use age prediction to determine, with high confidence, when a user is an adult. This allows many adults to access age-appropriate features without completing an explicit age check.

What's "discord"?
"If you do not read the newspapers you're uninformed. If you do read the newspapers, you're misinformed." -- Mark Twain2 -
Discord is a communication platform that runs as an app not a website on your computer or mobile device. It started with gamers providing an audio conference bridge for multi-player games but now has forum-like features for posting messages and pictures as well as video conferencing.
It is set up so that you can set up a "server" for your own interests and invite people to the server to participate. I have joined servers for cigars and coffee and join one of the kid's servers for when we're gaming together so we can use the audio conference bridge. I even created my own server for gaming with the Wife and her friends, but no one has joined yet because we haven't gotten those gaming sessions off the ground yet.
I'm not a big fan of the forum like features, it's more real-time and harder to find information on, but it's good if you're having conversations with folks. I'd also rather use a web browser than an app for forum-like features, but understand that an app is necessary for the audio and video conferencing features.
There's even a Discord server set up as a backup to this forum, it's a ghost town, but it's there. I imagine Discord servers with tobacco related topics will require some sort of age verification.
Here's an invite to the Discord server set up to back up the CCOM community: https://discord.gg/p4nVC5K
So far, it's free to set up a basic server with messaging, audio, and video with certain limits.
Discord Free Plan Limits (as of February 2026):
- File Upload Limit: 10 MB per file (reduced from 25 MB in 2024 due to storage cost management).
- Server Limit: Up to 100 servers can be joined.
- Voice/Video Calls: Up to 25 participants.
- Screen Sharing: Up to 720p quality.
