my computer is dead. i am posting from my wifes right now. all my stuff is lost.
including my catalog. thankfully i have them all on my blog but there are things i wont be able to get back.
this just made the secret santa about 100 times harder to organize.
i apologize in advance for any problems that this may cause.

    That is really too bad, very sorry to hear about it. I know what a pain that can be. We had a computer die a few years ago and we lost a bunch of stuff, and when we got the replacement, we got an external hard drive. Really sorry to hear about this hassle for you.

    Is the hard drive screwed up? If not, you can remove it from the computer and install it in another computer and recover the documents.

    Most the time folders can be recovered, I also found out the hard way, of course it costs. after that bought external hard drive, and now it's just natural to back everything up.

    If it happens that the hard drive is the problem, sometimes a temporary fix can be enacted by freezing the hard drive overnight then thawing out to room temperature and re- installing it long enough to copy all of your files.
    Yes, I know this sounds a bit wacky but it will work when all else fells.

    These guys are absolutely correct. Hard drive contents can almost always be recovered. The motherboard, RAM, system, etc. most always go before the HD. I have done it many times myself for friends and family. I'd be surprised if you don't have a BOTL there in Ohio close enough to drive on over and take care of this for you in less time than it take to smoke a blunt.. If not, ship the goods to me and I'll ship you back your files on a thumb drive.

    Sorry to hear that Matt. It totally sucks losing a computer. Hopefully you can get a new one soon or get yours fixed and recover what you lost

    With the viruses going around I would advise against this. There are some awesome boot sector viruses going around that spread when ANY infected drive is accessed. Most common BSOD right now is infection.... not physical failure.

    i know the hard drive is still good. it is a boot problem. i am going to have my personal computer specialist take a loo3k at it. (read: my friend who works in IT and builds computers for fun) of course he is out of town until sunday. so... until then im using my wifes computer that i cant stand. yay.

    Most people havent taken the time to get to know Linux. I use Mint and sampled everything from Tiny to Puppy to Xu and Kubuntu. I am just guessing Kuzi doesnt have a LiveCD of Ubuntu around :)

    Can't you read a Windows drive from a Mac? Seems like you ought. There's a popular nix flavor for you. Not too hard to find.

    uhhh... no. no i dont. im a cigar guy, a beer guy, a foodie, but by no means am i a computer guy.

    in theory, ill either have my computer fixed or replaced by monday. i just hope i dont have to spend all the time recreating some things.
