Agreed, thanks everyone, for service both current and rendered.marineatbn03:Happy Veterans Day to all the Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen out there. Your service and sacrifices have built the foundations of this country and will always be remembered and appreciated. While it is just a day marked on a calendar, what you have done marks the history of a grateful nation. - James0 -

We had a small memorial service at the Embassy and it was very emotional for me. We all reminded each other that "Freedom doesn't come free".0

I would like to honor two veterans on this day. Both were family members. First is my mother's brother my uncle Bill Bass. Uncle Bill was a tail gunner on a B-17 flying out of England. Bill's bomber was shot down over occupied France. Bill and another waist gunner made it out and parachuted into the countryside. The French Resistance picked them up and got them back across the Channel to England.
Second is my Father, Ed Jacobs. Dad was caught in the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes forest in Belgium in December. Dad was an ammo humper for a 60mm mortar crew. They got overrun and all were killed except my father. He escaped by playing dead and when the Germans continued advancing he crawled into a foxhole and stayed trapped in the snow for almost two weeks. He only told me this after I returned from Vietnam.
So smoke a stogie to honor those willing to give their lives for us to have what we have.
