Hygrometer adjustment problem

I just got my first humidor yesterday and I did the salt test and the analog hygrometer read about 64%. I know these aren't super accurate, but I still want to try and get it to read right.

Anyways, I tried to adjust the little screw in the back of the hygrometer and it would never go up...only down. So much so that now all it reads is like 5%. I've tried to turn it both ways, but nothing works although I'm using the smallest screw driver I have, it still doesn't quite seem small enough for it.

This is the hygrometer I have...am I doing something wrong or any tips? Hope I didn't just break it.

eh, just get a digital. they are worth every penny. xikar makes one that is adjustable.

Totally. Get a digi from Xykar and keep the analog for looks - they are way more accurate and give you peace of mind.

Wife is at Wal-Mart now....she is getting one of the $7 Springfield ones. I just want to make sure my box is ready for when my cigars get here. They shipped Friday via Priority so I'm guessing prolly Tuesday.

You'll be happy. Just give it a really long salt test and record what the difference, if any, would be. After that, you're good to go.

By the way, seeing she's willing to go to Wal-Mart and get your hygrometer, maybe now is the time to start working on her about your new, larger humidor. I'm just saying...

Haha true! Its been testing for 2 hours and has gone from 40 to 50 percent. I really need to work on my patience LOL

Don't be surprised if it is off by up to 20%. I have 2 and they are 12% & 18% off. Others on the forum have reported the same. On the other hand, some seem to be right on. It'**** or miss I guess...

It's been another 2 hours and it hasn't changed a bit...still at 50%. Surely it wouldn't be off by 25 points? The whole reason I wanted to get a digital is for it to be accurate...25 points is enough for me to take it back.

it is VERY possible. I believe mine was off 18 pts when I first set mine up. Trust the digi after a salt test - you can't go wrong.

Perhaps I have too much air in the bag...currently in a freezer bag. I'm going to leave it in a sandwich bag overnight

ive always done mine in a sandwich bag, arrowhead bottle cap with salt + few drops of water - no standing water on the salt. I let it sit in there at least 24 hours and then I adjust as such.

Solid advice regarding the salt test here. I know how you feel about having to work with an inaccuracy - I would end up taking mine back and buying a more expensive one, just because it would bug me anyway. Fortunately, my Springfield has been spot-on, and my humi holds such a rock-steady 68% that I wouldn't trip much if all of a sudden my hygro died. If your hygro does come up with an inaccuracy, it's up to you whether to work with it, or buy a more expensive adjustable one.

The digital was still at 50 this morning so it must be 25 points off. Will probably exchange it in hopes of something more accurate.

My humi is reading 50-51 percent with the Puck in it. So its about 75% RH. I only used distilled water as I don't have the PG solution. Any tips to bring RH down some until I can get some beads in? I left the humi open for a while but after I close it it climbs back up to 50%.

you might try and take the puck out - see what that does. It might get you too low though. Sounds like you have a good seal too.
