Going up that mast was wild. He was cranking me up with a winch and I'd go up a good bit and then drop back about two thirds of the progress we made. It'd re-tapped the winch on the mast and with a bosun's chair there's no way to extend your reach, your legs are dangling down so he had to get me up to the top to grab that shroud. He was bigger than me so I was the one to go up. I think it was a Cataline 21' sailboat if I remember correctly, at King Harbor.

What an astounding aspect of WWII that never entered my imagination.
https://youtu.be/3zUGeq6hSio?si=EDLutX3fDAQXb3Uz
Discover the untold story of how the Red Ball Express, a revolutionary WWII logistics operation run by 23,000 predominantly African American truck drivers, shattered German military assumptions and powered General Patton's lightning-fast advance across France in 1944. This meticulously researched historical narrative reveals how 5,958 trucks operating 24/7 on dedicated one-way highways delivered an unprecedented 12,500 tons of supplies daily across 400+ miles, achieving what German generals deemed physically impossible and proving that American industrial might and logistics innovation—not just combat prowess—won the war. Through verified accounts from military archives, captured German officer testimonies, and official U.S. Army Transportation Corps records, learn how this 82-day operation from August 25 to November 16, 1944, delivered 412,193 tons of supplies over 122 million ton-miles, shortened the war by an estimated six months, and forced **** commanders to confront the reality that they faced not just a superior army but an entire industrial civilization mobilized for victory. This comprehensive account explores the racial dynamics of segregated troops achieving logistics miracles, the mechanical innovations that kept convoys rolling despite 30% daily vehicle failure rates, and the psychological warfare impact of endless American truck convoys that demoralized Wehrmacht forces who could hear them running all night, every night, carrying unlimited supplies while German units rationed their last ammunition.

Logistics can not win a war. But lack of it may cause defeat.
The Redball Express has never received the recognition that it should.

Hmmm.
What Caused the Great Depression?
What were the major causes of the Great Depression? Among the suggested causes of the Great Depression are: the stock market crash of 1929; the collapse of world trade due to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff; government policies; bank failures and panics; and the collapse of the money supply. In this video, Great Depression expert David Wheelock of the St. Louis Fed discusses the leading theories.David Wheelock discusses the Great Depression as part of a workshop at the St. Louis Fed. This is Part 5 of that presentation.

My grandfather grew up in a rural area during that time. They raised their own food and basically did everything themselves. If there was something they couldn’t do or didn’t have, they bartered for it just like most people in the area. He once told me that the first time he even heard of a depression was after he had volunteered for the army and left home.
If it don’t bother me, it don’t bother me. Just leave me alone.

Nothing more efficient than a wartime economy to smooth things out. I hope we are not headed in that direction.

One of my uncle was a mechanic in WW2, He told me stories about going around Germany, fixing broken down trucks or other vehicles., that were stranded around the countryside. Mainly him, a jeep load of tools, parts and a helper.
Don't let the wife know what you spend on guns, ammo or cigars.

My grandfather was drafted toward the end of WWll in his late thirties with 7 kids at home. They kept him stateside, some old Colonel made him his personal driver and he learned some carpentry skills that he used the rest of his life.
