Humidor size regulation??

Hey all! So this is part question/part complaint about how many cigars a site says their humidor can hold...ha!
I've seen a few humidors with the SAME dimensions say they can hold different amounts. In this case, lets take the ratio of 15Wx10Dx6.5 H.
I've, so far, seen places say this "size" can hold 100, 120 and 130 cigars! It's maddening!
Does anyone know of a kind of "rule of thumb" to figure out what size box can hold approx a certain number of cigars?

Humidors are sized by coronas...if it says 100ct the 100 coronas will fit in it.

One time I counted my stash of random size cigars in my 120 count and I think I had 95 with a bit of room to spare. As always - your results may vary. The way I see it is you should always have a back-up plan. If you'd really love to buy a particular humidor, but you are worried that you might outgrow it,........go ahead and set up a container / tupperdor or coolidor so you can handle overflow easily. Then you can buy that particular humidor that you like even though you might outgrow it. And one nice feature of coolers and rubbermaid containers is that they are easier to maintain humidity even if they only contain a few cigars vs a wooden humidor that works best at maintaining humidity when it is filled to near capacity.
  • Bob- True! But I only have room for a humidor, not a cooler unfortunately. Wish I did! Sounds a ton easier and cheaper to maintain!

Ok, but it doesn't have to be a big cooler, or even a cooler at all. I've got one small container that I use constantly. It has a great seal and mine holds 25-28 cigars of every length. I'm just sayin' that there's tons of overflow options out there of all sizes. I look at storage containers in a different way these days. I am always asking myself, "Can I use this as a humidor?" LOL

My 300 count has only held 180. And that's taking advantage of almost every bit of free space save for the humidifiers.

I was at BedBathandBeyond with the Fiance last night, and I saw several things that would make great inexpensive humidors, I was looking at one of the containers and she asked me what I was looking at it for and when I told her she laughed... made me think about your post Bob!
  • Bob - Gotcha! Do you know if theres a page or somewhat-concise thread on how to use a cooler? I'm wondering about the overall cost, materials needed, and what sizes to use. Also...since you seem to know this subject...would you use it and put your sitcks in an old cigar box IN the cooler? How does that work
Yeah when I see 100ct humis, I wonder if I'll really get more than say...60 in it (various sizes and humidification devices).

I found this website the other day, seems to have some really awesome setups for coolidors!

I found a few threads and a video that cover coolidor set up and these should provide answers to some of your questions. As far as cost it will depend on the cooler you select and the humidification you use. It could be done as cheaply as $40 for a 70 quart Coleman Xtreme cooler (walmart) and $4.17 will get you 4 lbs of Mimi brand silica kitty litter (also at walmart). Plus you'll need a digital hygrometer for around $15 to $20. .

Wow thanks again for the info! After looking at this...I'm going to go look at some coolers in person. I know I don't need at 70qt cooler...but I found a 36 and 40qt that looks good!
