Outside mounted Humidor Hygrometer

What am I missing?
It has a rubber/plastic "O" ring that covers the holes that I assume are where the moisture reading is taken. The wood inside of the hole is stained/varnished the same as the humidor. And I have yet to see one that did not sit crooked in the cut out.
(This is purely an academic question since I will be getting rid of the analog gauges and replacing them with digital.)
How the heck do they read the moisture content?
Because I love to experiment with hygrometers I took my razor and cut slits in the "O" ring where the hygrometer holes are ("O" ring still intact), and put it back in. An unintended consequence, it actually sits flush now, and it is a tight fit.
Put a small dish of distilled water with a wick in it, and I will go back in a couple of hours to see if there is any change, and I do expect to see a difference.

With the same moisture source as pre-alteration, the reading has already gone up 12 points.
