Dyes

I'm pretty new and heard some cigar makers use dyes on their wrappers. Doesn't sound too pleasing. Any input would be great.  Al K. Pittstown NY

It's not really a dye but a nicotine wash. It came into fashion back during the boom when manufacturers couldn't keep up with demand and resorted to this method to get their product out before it had been fully fermented or to make the wrappers appear more uniform in color. I had a fellow in the biz once told me that if the wrapper is black then it's been washed but I can't say that's a fact.
