I heard the original reason was to keep fingers from getting "dirty", but I bet some of the old timers know for sure.

It was presented to a queen she didn't want tar on joe fingers so cigars
had a silk band on them. After that companies put names on them and so on and so onMoney can't buy taste7 -

As tabako says, allegedly men smoked cigars while wearing white gloves and the bands kept the gloves clean. One of the many legends.

I recall Mark Twain protesting their use in his autobiography, "Never had any use for a cigar with a life preserver..." I think it was just marketing, advertising, as Kuzi said.
