I have a direct Neanderthal ancestor—a grandparent to the 250th degree....

The person who guesses closest to the total number of (tested) Neanderthal variants in my genetic code wins a tenner (it is above average for Europeans). One guess per person before 5 AM, tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 19) wins.

    There are 1,436 markers scattered across most genomes. At each of these markers there might be a genetic variant that evolved in Neanderthals and came back into the human lineage when the two groups interbred.

    Because most people inherited variants from both parents, you could have 0, 1, or 2 copies of the Neanderthal variant at each marker.

    Can you imagine breeding with a lower evolved species?

     I have 286 Neanderthal variants. Mike Todd wins with a guess of 300, only off by 14 variants. Congrats, I'll send 'em out Tuesday morning. @MikeTodd
