What's a good gun?

0patience0patience Posts: 10,665 ✭✭✭✭✭
Looking for a good 9mm.
My son is looking for a pistol.

He shoots about every weekend with his cousin, so he's not new to guns, but wants a 9mm, cause he likes them.
I like the Smith & Wesson SD9VE or SD9 and Ruger LC9s.

So what pistols do you like what ever caliber?

Glock, love glocks. Also the Springfield armory XDS

Screw the pistol. Get yourself a Mauser K-98K!

But if a handgun it must be, can't go wrong with a Sig or Luger.

Sig 226, 229, 320 are all really nice. I also really like my CZ SP-01 Tactical and Colt Competition Model.

Owned and shot pretty much everything listed so far.
Sig is always a good choice.
    Ruger the same.
(On the property I carry a 6 inch Taurus Judge.)
I own and carry a Beretta in 9mm.
Depending on the weather I also carry a Beretta 380.
When I get it back from the Gunsmith I will add my Para Ordnance double stacked 45 to the mix.
Would be carrying a 50AE but the tornado ate it.

I have an FN 40 I really like and a couple revolvers, a 5 shot S&W and a Dan Wesson Arms .357 which is a great target gun. All depends on what he wants to do with it.

He mostly target shoots. His cousin has a collection of guns they shoot with on the weekend.
He is looking at some course they offer in Portland for concealed carry and stuff.

If he wants it for concealed carry then I would suggest a S&W Shield or Glock G43. There is a big difference between carry and target shooting though.

He is only looking at the courses offered. He may or may not get the permit.

I've had the permit for the past 30+ years, but haven't had a pistol in 15 years. I still renew it every 4 years, as I never know if I want to carry again.

Yea, it is. But it leaves no doubt in your mind.
The first time I shot it was at a 50 gallon barrel.
It hit center and the top half of the barrel went into orbit.

Glock 19 hands down. I own Sigs, Springfield, Ruger's and CZ.  The Glock 19 is one of the most versatile 9 mm pistols out there. It does great on the range and it honestly is easy to conceal as well. They can be had for the same price as the other guns that you have listed and are bulletproof with a ton of aftermarket upgrades available.

The best gun is one he's comfortable with and enjoys shooting. As you can see, everyone has their own preferences.

A few good guns mentioned already so I will add one that I have not seen that I liked enough to purchase and it is now my new nightstand gun, although mine is .40SW.

FN FNS 9 is one heck of a gun for the money. Has a very decent trigger right out of the box.   https://fnamerica.com/products/pistols/fns-9/

Glock G19 Gen4 MOS, fits my hand like a glove. Very very important that a pistol fells right in your hand before buying!

Scatter gun in the background is a Mossberg 590A1 LE Magpul, also highly recommended. Got plenty of lead for the zombie apocalypse to.

He's going to go to one of the shooting ranges in Portland and try out some guns and see which ones he likes.

    Thanks for all the input.

That is the best thing he can do IMO.

If he likes Glocks, generation 5s will be released soon. New trigger, ambidextrous controls, steel sight, flaired magwell, no finger grooves, a new barrel twist that you can use lead bullets in.

Those will be $1,600 when they start to trickle into Cali.

Any of these guns mentioned should be able to take down  @TNBigfoot68 if you encounter him on a trail. If he is hunting Bigfoot I would suggest the Spillway Trail.

that is always a possibility, if lead is flying, you need to be ducking and moving. @Yakster just invented the new Smith and Wesson weight loss program, lol.

Speaking of guns, taking the kids out to the family range today. Got the 10/22 setup for their little arms. Will also be taking out a few other .22s, the AR and my wife's grandfather's 410.
