Why, when someone dies are people at their worst?

My step son's wife's father had a massive heart attack.
He was found on the floor by my step son and there was nothing to be done.
Her father was in his early 50s and it was totally unexpected.
So far 2 people who have blood ties and nothing else have been caught ransacking the house.
2 people who did not give a darn about him when he was alive.
The daughter has been at the house everyday looking for the legal stuff.
She has brought some items to my house to put under lock and key.
I have offered to stay there and guard the place.
Of course she will have to notify the police if she accepts my offer.
I will bring one of our dogs to act as an alarm, the most aggressive one.
It is hard enough on her already and to put up with this kind of behavior is just wrong.

People disgust me.

This seems very common nowadays. People looking for an easy dollar.

I would suggest that the death has nothing to do with bringing out the worst in some people. Rather, I'd suggest that the death just gives makes that bad behavior more salient.

    Some people are just mean.

I have zero sympathy for those who intentionally do others wrong. The people you described ransacking the house are cold, evil, scum. Just always know what goes around comes around and they will pay sooner or later one way or another.

Sorry for your loss, Jay. And, yeah, seems to be a family-universal scenario, happened to me when my mother died.

My mother has owned funeral homes since I was a kid.
I worked in the industry for quite a few years.
I've seen more fights outside the funeral home than on TV it seems like to me.

I've even seen families start fighting over their loved one's possessions before the person was even dead.

When it comes to dividing up grandmas' stuff, people turn into vultures.
