This reminds me of ages ago before I got into law enforcement. I was an insurance adjuster and I had to deal with a local ambulance chaser who was very good at what he did.
Back in the good old days when you could smoke in a building, during a trial when a witness was coming up that would hurt his case. He would light a cigar that he had put a thin wire in. The ash would get longer and longer and not fall off. The entire jury would be watching his cigar and did not hear a word the witness said.
Simple, but it worked.
