Pre-Castro non-Cuban cigar brands

Okay, here's another "who-the-heck-cares" question for you fellow geeks out there...

Cuba may have been the world dominant cigar producer before Castro, but it wasn't the only team in the league. Cigars were being made in the DR, in Mexico, in Honduras, the Canary Islands, (I think even in Nicaragua) long before that. And not just locally; they were exporters. They had brands that they sold all over the world. They had their own blends that weren't concerned with capturing a formerly-Cuban market. Do any of those brands/blends still exist? Can they be had outside of their respective homes? Has anyone ever tried any?

I read something about cigars from the Canary Islands a while ago, but don't remember if the cigars are still around.
