Caldwell Savages

Good afternoon, I'm new here but have a few questions. The Caldwell Savage is the first cigar I knew was "box worthy." I'm a relatively new smoker and this is the first that I just sat back and said "damn! This is a good smoke" and reallllllly enjoyed it.

But after a massive fire at their factory Caldwell has discontinued this line.

First question: anybody know where I can still find them? They're sold out everywhere online. Any shops in Michigan/Ohio that still have them in stock?

Second question: there is a gold label and a dark blue label. The gold label is the standard Savages, but I tried the dark blue label and it was awful. I bought a 10 pack and still have 4-5 aging in my humidor, hoping they'll improve over time. Anyone know what's up with the blue label, and why they're so different from the gold label?

Thank you, looking forward to some great discussions here.

Welcome, Charlie. Bummer about the fire and the follow on disappointment. Maybe if you could find another with a similar wrapper, binder, filler combo?

Hello Charlie. I myself have never seen the Savages “blue” but the “gold” has a natural habano wrapper so I’m guessing the other is probably maduro.
But with a quick search I found some toros online.

I never considered it might be a Maduro, thanks RDP. And that'd make sense why I wouldn't like it as I haven't cared for the few Maduros I've tried.

Hawks, good point about looking for more Habano wrapped sticks. Looks like the Alec Bradley Gatekeeper is also an Habano wrapped medium body cigar - I've been wanting to try that one anyways. Looks like I'll make that my next purchase. Thanks!

@Charlie_Hazard plenty of folks here to offer suggestions. Introduce yourself in the Newbie Welcoming Thread and stick around. I've been here for just a few months and have gained a ton of knowledge from this good group. 👍

You could also try a Caldwell sampler. I've seen them online, maybe cigar bid or something? Anyways, the sampler comes with a eastern standard, a midnight Express, the king is dead, and a couple of others whose names escaped me. I find that all the caldwells are pretty much in the same neighborhood. As far as the strength and flavor profile go. They're all different, don't get me wrong, but you might find a different Caldwell that you like.

@Vision is our resident Caldwell expert, what say you?

I'm a fan of the Caldwell Eastern Standard Midnight Express and the Signature is pretty good too.

@VegasFrank is right. CBid has/had the Caldwell Sampler. It's legit when you can get it for $15 before shipping so grab a couple. I thought the blue label was not Savages, but Long Live the King Mad Mofo..... That's actually a really good cigar. Savages is older production I thought they dumped around 2020
