Pipe stem tips?

I see some of you have chosen to use rubber? tips on your stems. Is this to protect against bite marks or is it a better set up? Also, does adding these tips affect flavor?

I think the main purpose is to protect the stem from tooth marks and give the user a better "purchase" on the stem. I tried them...not for me.
Hey, you gonna eat the rest of that corndog?2 -
I use them to protect the stem and because it makes it more comfortable for me to clench…which I do quite a bit
If it don’t bother me, it don’t bother me. Just leave me alone.

I don't like them either, seems a shame to defeat the feel of a well designed bit.

I tried them for a while but gave them up. They can lead to problems with tan lines from Vulcanite (black) and Ebonite (non-black) stems and can trap saliva causing a mess and leading to stem oxidation. If you do use them, throwing them in boiling water regularly isn't a bad idea.

I didn't think I would like them. I was wrong.
