Arturo Fuentes Especiales

LittleBuddy50LittleBuddy50 Posts: 61 ✭✭✭

So a few weeks ago I was in BEVMO and bought a AF especiales. All weekend long I've been battling a nasty cold. I felt somewhat better today so I lit up this cigar with my morning coffee. I hadn't had breakfast yet so I didn't know my senses were affected. I wasn't able to small the cigar when I pulled it out of my humidor but I blamed that on a stuffy nose. I lit it up and couldn't taste anything while smoking it. Nothing. Wasted $11, so I went back and replaced it with a fresh one to be enjoyed when I can smell and taste again. What did I miss out on? How are these cigars? I guess I'll find out for myself in a couple weeks when I spark up its replacement.

Fuente…no taste…sounds like you got it. Didn’t miss anything lol. But that’s my opinion. Everyone has a different one about almost every cigar. But one thing for sure, smoking them with a head cold will definitely give you the wrong impression of one.

    Sounds a lot like Covid.

Maybe so. I had a nice solid Corona case in Jan 2022. Since then I've lost my sense of smell and taste twice but these times were milder than the first. I'm alone in the house, FAM is on vacation and I didn't leave much and I was basically isolated but maybe it was just a bad cold who knows. I'm looking forward to smoking this AF especiales since I feel cheated by the first experience!

Not sure where I got $11 from, but I paid $7.

I was wondering about that too; $11 seemed high since they can be had for way less online. I never looked closely at my lounge to see if they carried those, I guess to lack of interest, but I will next time I'm there.

And again, not saying you don't know this already or telling you how to do you, but in general I'd say if you can buy a stick locally/in person for $7 you shouldn't expect much. There are plenty of very smokeable cigars available online for $7 and under, but at a local humidor... very doubtful.

Yea there is BEVMO 1 mile from my house (my liver regularly wakes up in bed next to me crying) and they sell cigars so I picked up a few cigars there to fill up my new humidor. I have made 2 orders online since then and its way cheaper. This dam cold or whatever gave me brain fog (or maybe it was the Nyquil) and that's why I confused the prices.

Ime peter nailed it. There is a waterline with AF. I like Hemingways, esp. the maduros. Like smoking Christmas cookies.

But a Gran Reserva claro (candela) tasted of wet dog x licking a car ashtray. Had a wandering burn line, and came completely unstitched by the final third.

The añejo I had was stellar, and $25 …

Long Covid absolutely (!)ing ruined me. I gained 50 pounds, can breathe because expensive inhaler 2x/diem, and walking a mile is uphill both ways. (Prior, I could crank
out 15 miles in 4hours. Sic transit gloria Estefan.)

What drew me into cigars (beyond vague adolescent memories of sorta liking a couple) was a neighbor suggesting I try nicotine patches. Hold m’beer; I’m going for pricy smokes!

The lower-end Fuentes are mediocre and the upper-end Fuentes are overpriced. Try a Hemingway... a Signature or a Classic. After your head clears up.

I just had that cigar today (Gran Reserva) for the first time. Free too, a buddy brought 3 of them to me but one had a super tough draw and it got canned. I Liked the one I was able to smoke but honestly I've yet to smoke 1 that I haven't liked!

That might not have been a Hemingway...

Gran Reserva and Hemingway are two different things, but "A" for effort. The GR's are good, too.

Well, I should correct myself. The Hemingway is Gran Reserva, but it's not alone in that category. I'm guessing Peter said that it might not have been a Hemingway for both that reason, and the fact that it's very rare to have a Hemingway that won't draw. Unravel? Yes. Won't draw, mmm, possible, but not often.

So, I had forgotten I had this little guy, I bought an "especiales" to replace the one I was too sick to enjoy. Loved it, maybe the best one I've had yet. I do not see them on cigars international (CI). I like to use CI since I get 10% off (veteran discount) and free shipping. But I'll be smoking these again for sure.
