Oy, The Oldfart needs a little help

jlmartajlmarta Posts: 7,881 ✭✭✭✭✭
So, I have a couple latitudes and longitudes that I need to verify but the keyboard on my iPhone doesn’t seem to have a ‘degree’ sign so I’m unable to type the latitudes and longitudes into my search bar. How might I come across a ‘degree’ symbol?  I’m sure one of you genii (plural of genius?) can help me.

Thanks in advance, Y’all.....  B)

    Dear Old Fart,

Tap and hold the "zero" key on the key board -- this should give you a pop up that has the degree symbol.

    Your friend,

Well, shoot!  I guess I’m dumber’n I thought. I figured I could just type in the coordinates in the search bar ang Google, Google Earth, or some search engine would look ‘em up and show me a map of where those coordinates are. All I get is gibberish, error messages, or nothing at all. I can’t even find a place on Google Earth on my iPhone where I can enter the coordinates. I’m such a dumbkopf....

i mean, I’ve just gotta find this location - it’s where I stashed all my leprechaun gold......  :p :

    Don't put degrees.
    Enter it like this.

    46.16354, -123.8934

When it would be normally written like this.
    N 46.16354 W -123.8934
    In Fumo Pax

You should be able to enter it in degrees, minutes, and seconds without the symbols in Google Maps and it should work, like 121 35 43 N, 68 24 12 W.

I used to do this all the time to look at microwave radio paths to look for bodies of water, irrigated fields, or obvious obstructions that would cause problems.

Well that didn't work, maybe only works on PC browsers.  There's sites that convert DMS to decimal degrees and do datum conversions too.

Hot Damn!  That worked, Tony @0patience

So, what if the coordinates you want to verify are written like this:

    48°42’35” N, -122°44’48” W

Would I have to convert somehow?

Well, the first coordinate worked out to a seemingly valid number but the second didn’t. It’s numbers but not in the same format as the first - if that makes any sense.

The second coordinate im trying to convert is
-122°45’48” but the answer I get is -48”/3600 which doesn’t seem to work.

Sorry, that site converts angles, not coordinates. Let me find another one.  This one should work, sometimes phones are a pain.

You can try an IOS app called DMS Converter if you're running IOS 11 or later.

Here's a Google Maps help page:

    https://support.google.com/maps/answer/18539?co=GENIE.Platform=iOS&hl=en&oco=0

    For IOS:

In the search box at the top, type your coordinates. Here are examples of formats that work:
    • Degrees, minutes, and seconds (DMS): 41°24'12.2"N 2°10'26.5"E
    • Degrees and decimal minutes (DMM): 41 24.2028, 2 10.4418
    • Decimal degrees (DD): 41.40338, 2.17403
