It probably isn't as bad as Vegas. But Portland is supplying a lot of those people transportation to the coast. Which, in a town of 15,000 people and another town of 6,000 people, the added people sucking up resources from the ones that actually pay taxes is quite a strain.
The courthouse is 1/2 block from houses, so yes and no to the residential area.
The homeless are everywhere. Residential, commercial. All over.
They started moving in to backyards and store entries and nothing was done and now have overtaken everything. The bleeding hearts will even help set up shelters when it's cold out.
We're a small community and it puts a strain on the resources that are supposed to be there for the community.
I've gone to court twice for people trying to break into my vehicles and stealing from my garage in the last 4 years.
Without the cameras all over my property, they probably wouldn't have been convicted.
And before you think I am some cold, heartless beast, I donate several hundreds of dollars to needy respectful families for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
But I don't see a lot of respect or law abiding from the filth that has been coming here.

Hint: there are too many resources, especially in super blue Oregon, for any sane person with full faculties to want to be homeless. Most homeless people are the product of a society that created them, and while they do break in and commit crimes, I'm not gonna categorize them as "filth" because that's too dangerously close to what Hitler was calling Jews in the early 30s. They're mentally disturbed humans.

The more resources and money you spend to eliminate homelessness, the easier it is to live homeless or at least live in a home that is being provided to you. 80 percent of the homeless are that way by their own choices.

As you all know, I work in a military environment. There was once this kid who worked for me who said in the office, "I don't give bums money because their bums and they'll use it on drugs."
Well, that created a whole argument in the office with guys on both sides. I challenged that kid to go work for one day at Las Vegas red white and blue, a homeless veteran outreach program. I may have challenged his manhood while doing it 😂, so he took me up on it and he went there.
After one day, he couldn't believe the people he met. They weren't the drug craze scum of the Earth, he found out. They were mentally incapacitated veterans, some hooked on drugs or booze, some left that way by their own government and country. He ended up working there 25 hours a week after a while, and now he is the executive director and runs the whole goddàmn organization.
Point is, quit flapping your freaking gums about all the problems in the world as you sit up in your Ivory Tower and lament the world below. Take action! Be a part of the solution! If you have the ability to help a hundred veterans, or to help one veteran, or to help someone help one veteran, then you've actually done your civic duty.
Be careful though, it's not like jury duty. It's actual real hard work, making a difference at all, and so don't be surprised if you come home angry, or if you come home crying, or if you can't put it down...
