Likely carbon monoxide. If you have older style smoke alarms you can pick up portable carbon monoxide detectors for a couple of bucks. It's definitely worth have them by your furnace and any gas appliances, because without it you'll likely be dead before you know it's an issue.

That was my first thought too, but this a.m.'s news says it's been ruled out. One of my all time favorite actors, made the characters come to life in a way that many actors cannot.

I’m more concerned about the shepherd being found dead locked in a closet

They said it wasn't immediately apparent. A backdraft with a faulty furnace could fill the house with co then clear out minutes later

Didn't the dog die as well? Did he commit suicide too?

One of the dogs was locked in a crate, the one that died. The other two dogs were free enough to probably scavenge for water, etc.

So, the news is saying Hanta virus, which makes sense in New Mexico. My first thought, and many others, was carbon monoxide poisoning, but a simple carboxyhemoglobin test will rule that out in about 30 minutes. May take longer when the person is dead for a while.

I remember back a few decades ago when the virus was killing young boys, and the scientists couldn't figure it out. The native shamans told them that mice and little boys don't get along, and were ignored. As it turned out, the virus is spread by mice, and little boys are the most likely ones to be messing with the mice.

Sad tale, Gene Hackman was one of the greats.

I read that actually his wife died of hantavirus probably a week before he died, and he spent the week wandering around the home in state of late-alzheimer's induced confusion. Very sad indeed.
