Tell me about this humidor...

Good day gentlemen...and ladies if there are any, This is my first post and I wanted to ask a question. My father gave me a few humidors when he stopped smoking cigars and I've kind of started up as a back burner hobby. I live in Nashville so I am planning on supporting CAO, even if I only smoke one every week or so. My question is simple..take a look at the pictures below and if you have information about this humidor..what it's worth, if it was part of a sample? etc..then let me know. I will probably be looking to trade it for a CAO humidor a little later. Thanks for your time and God Bless!

Doesn't look too elaborate, and the glue stains are a definite minus - I'd say just google around and look. It may very well be this H.Upmann is worth more/a better humi than whatever CAO humi you may be able to get

And why so much loyalty towards CAO just because of where you live? It's a good brand, but it's just one brand out of many good ones out there; no reason to limit yourself just to their cigars/humidors. I just don't understand the concept of supporting only one cigar manuf. based on some conception of geography
  • Thanks for the reply macro...I'm not going to just smoke CAO's but I am going to put them as a regular smoke...guess I like the uniformity of having a humidor of a certain brand filled with that brand of cigars...while my other humi will have an assortment.

You can try ebay and see if there are similar humidors for sale so you can get a rough idea of what the market value is.

Not sure what the stains are but should be easy enough to clean up. Season it up and away you go. If you limit yourself to just CAO you will be selling yourself short. I have only found 1 CAO I like.

you might want to get in touch with the National Cigar Museum. They are very helpful in telling about old cigar memorabilia. Also, it is possible they will buy items from you to display in their museum. Here is the link: link

Welcome to the forums. Why CAO? Many others and arguably better brands to choose from. I bet Watson would know.

Welcome to the forum! As many others have said why are you looking to mainly only smoke CAO? I don't get the Nashville/CAO connection. I spent the first 18 years of my life in Northeast TN and can remember hearing anything about CAO's.

Hey I like CAOs!!! Lol the america is delicious! And the gold and the LX2 and the ...
  • As Hays mentions, CAO International is a local business here in Nashville. I didn't realize that I would cause such a stir by stating I would focus on CAO cigars as my regular smoke. I have other cigars that I plan on smoking and I understand I would be shorting myself if I ONLY smoked a certain brand. Right now I have a Ghurka Empire VI, 5 Vegas 'A', Alec Bradley Tempus box pressed (Sampler from CI) and a few others that are aging for a smoke. I have recently smoked a MoW Ruination which knocked me on my butt! What I wanted to do is get a CAO humidor full of CAO's..and then use my other humidor to have an assortment, as mentioned above :) Thank you all for the welcomes and I look forward to getting involved with this forum. It's a very interesting hobby and though I don't smoke one everyday, I like studying the make up and ratings of cigars. I picked up a CAO La Traviata Divino yesterday and plan on lighting it up tomorrow.

The La Traviata is a tasty smoke. Had my first one last week.

Ok, a few things need to be mentioned:

    1) Cigars aren't like auto's, tools, or appliances - most who enjoy cigars don't base their loyalities on regions. Most who enjoy cigars gravitate to particular brands based on what their palate dictates/what they like, not the cigar manuf.'s HQ. The reason you're hearing so much from us about this is because it's more than a little strange to be drawn to a particular brand based on where they're located - the general advice is to smoke what appeals to your palate, not the HQ of the manuf. (which few of us ever pay much attention to). You may find you don't care for many of CAO's lines, so don't go buying a humidor full of smokes you may not like - try a few samplers before pulling the trigger on boxes.

    2) Ratings mean nothing. Cigars are like wine or art - the only thing that matters is what you like. Not ratings, not price, not reputation - your palate should dictate what you stock your humidor with. To do any differently is to be so pretentious that you miss the entire point behind cigars. Check out this website: http://www.blackbandproject.com/. It's a promo for Camacho cigars, but it makes some very good points, namely, that you should follow what you like, not what someone else tells you to like

    3) Don't judge a manufacturer based on a single stick - I generally don't like 5 Vegas Classic, but I'm very fond of 5 Vegas Gold; I don't care for Oliva's Series V, but I love their Nubs and Connecticut Reserve. There's so much variety in cigar lines, that you'll often find yourself pulled to cigars by their body/taste, not who the manfacturer is (again, cigars aren't like auto's or applicances - brands really don't mean much of anything)

Anyway, I've gone on long enough - just experiment! If you don't like a particular cigar, don't write off the manufacturer, just try a different type!

  • XMacro, Again I appreciate the tips..I understand what you are saying and will take what you say into account. I am happy, that one of the more enjoyed cigar brands happens to be at my doorstep. I guess you could compare it to living down the street to a major Napa Valley wine producer. You can visit that wine producer, they treat you as one of their own..and therefore you feel like supporting that company. Of course if their wine tastes like a Goats @ss then you probably would not support it much. I like CAO cigars, so that won't be an issue with me :)

For the ratings, I will agree to disagree. Like a road and track magazine, I feel the experts in this business know what they are doing. I will say that it is the individuals palate that will ultimately decide which stick to smoke..but after reading reviews on this website, in magazines etc..I will certainly steer clear of some certain brands and will try others because of their review.

Also, to answer another above post, I have recently e-mailed an individual from the National Cigar museum to see if they can assist me with the humidor.

    1) PM back to you Sherlock

    2) Sherlock makes a good point here. I know we are all encouraging him to try different sticks because we know how important it is to diversify your palate, but I'm confident that he will indeed expand his palate beyond C.A.O. It goes to what he already pointed out - sometimes, you just want to support what's in your backyard - doesn't mean you have to do it to the exclusion of everything else, but you still represent them. I love my local b&m, and I rep them, buy from them, and support them wholeheartedly. Do they have the best selection or prices? No, they really don't - the point is, they're MY local shop and I feel like home when I go there. So despite the fact that I buy from other shops, as well as online (HAIL THE BEARD!), I still call THAT place "My Cigar Shop". I'm sure a lot of you guys know what I'm saying here...

Not sure why that caused some consternation. You did say you'd have a CAO humi and then one for other sticks. And who cares what the hell you smoke and why? The one thing I liked about this forum was a lack of juding others about their tastes and choices. Hope that isn't changing.

I understand what Sherlock is saying. It makes sense to me that if he likes that cigar and wants to support local business he would put that into his regular rotation. I have a 5 Vegas humi that I only keep 5 Vegas cigars in. I like a few of my local shops and if I had a company that was close by, I liked the cigars, and they treated me right I would def. support them. I don't think he ever said anything about smoking them exclusively. Even if he did "No one can tell me what is a good cigar--for me. I am the only judge." Mark Twain.

I see now. I never heard about that. Then again TN is like 3 states in 1, Northeast, Middle and West...lol Thanks!
  • I got a message back from the contact at the Cigar museum...
A key question that doesn't seem to be answered: is it Cuban or from somewhere else. No Cuban guarantee stamp, and the logo is missing the word Habana, so probably somewhere else. Good looking, definately modern (after 1960). Wouldn't surprise me to be post 1990. Value? Depends on where it's from. Cuban would bring a few hundred dollars, about double anywhere else.

I'm fairly certain it is not a Cuban made humidor..Actually, I think it was purchased from a large cigar store in Statesville NC, the name of which I won't mention because it's a competitor with cigar.com. So, I have found most of the answers, probably just a limited run of sample cigars + humidor specials that my dad happened upon.
