Instruments

Does anyone here play an instrument? I used to play guitar, but I quit and started piano. Right now I'm learning to play Beethoven's 5th Symphony, which surprisingly isn't as hard as it sounds. I think next I'm either going to learn to play the saxophone or violin. What about y'all? Do y'all play anything and are y'all learning anything new?

Played the tuba in high school. Been goofin' around on the gee-tar for years, but never got serious enough to take lessons.

My mom played piano quite well and thought her young boys needed to learn to play an instrument. My older bother being, what he though, smarter than me immediately chose the piano because he thought it was easy especially after watching our mother play. I on the other hand wasn't so quick to jump into anything. I asked my mother if I had to play the piano or if I could choose any instrument that played music, she told me any instrument that played music. I verified that I could choose ANY instrument and she said that I could so at 8 years I old chose to play the......................................

I've played the alto sax, the bass guitar, stand up bass, and the organ (shut up) at various times. After all that experimenting I figured out that I suck at music. :)

In HS I played guitar and drums. After a few year Hiatus I'm back to playing guitar on a regular basis.

Started drum lessons in grade school, learned to read and write the music and beat the hell out of a rubber dot. Yay. Joined a drum and bugle corp (marching band) when I was 12, no openings for drummers so I learned the bass baritone. Eventually saved enough to buy a drum set when i was 16, now that was fun. Sold (gave) it to a friend of mine starting a garage band when I was in my 20's. Told my wife a few years ago thinking of buying another drum set when I retire. She said she would move out, I said don't sweeten the deal, lol.

Started drums when I was 10 or 11 in school band. Stuck with band through high school and played on a college line for 4 years too. Picked up guitar in 6th grade, stuck with that too. Played for a campus ministry band during college, and one summer played in a rock band going around to military bases, prisons, and juvenile det. centers. Unfortunately I don't have much time anymore to play, but I'm hoping to pick it back up a little after grad school. Grad school is in order to fund a house large enough to hold 1. Cigars, and 2. All my guitar and drum ***. Lol!

First instrument was the sexophone, in elementary. Failed miserably. Next the French Horn in junior high. Failed miserably. The one axe I tried hardest to master was the cello. For three years I practiced twice a day, one hour minimum. (My self-discipline was much better back then.) Began each and every practice with the theme from Black Orpheus. Somewhere long about that third year, my wife remarked: "I recognize that. You've played that before. That's some sort of tune, isn't it?" Which is about the time I realized I must be tone deaf. The essence of tone deaf is a musical imagination, cause it sounds wonderful to me, but that's all in my imagination.

Went ahead and played sporadically another four years. Gave it up when I went sailing. Cannot swing a cello on a moving schooner. Still have it. Gaze at it wistfully now and then.

Best success was with the obaw. That's a soda straw with the end cut into an oboe reed. Makes a wonderful noise like a duck trying to sing. Big hit with five and six year olds. You can stick the end into a bottle to make a bass obaw, or slide a smaller straw into a larger straw to make an obone, or cut finger holes to make the rare clarinaw. I'll score a straw, cut an obaw, snap a pic, and post here, later today. I played the obaw best just cause you can be tone deaf and still sing like a duck.

    Sad.

Trombone, used to be pretty good. Got to warm-up with J.J. Johnson, once. Haven't kept it up.

I like Oliva and Quesada (including Regius) a lot.  I will smoke anything, though.

Been drumming for 39 years. Started out with a pair of sticks, practice pad and instructional book. Played in school band/orchestra/jazz band/marching band through high school while taking private lessons. After high school I was always jamming with somebody. Started playing in bars here in the Phoenix area in 1985 and haven't stopped since. Have done 3 full length CD's with various projects locally. I've been lucky to do some fill in work for a national band based here in Phx which has included a large outdoor festival and fly out weekend shows. Currently I'm in 3 different projects that play here locally and travel to casinos here in the state

I own a guitar. Can make sounds with it on occasion that sound familiar. Really need to get back into it.

I'd love to learn to play the organ. Did you ever learn any Bach on the organ?

I don't think so, I wasn't able to learn very much on it besides simple church hymns. I took lessons a few times a month for about a year and then my teacher died (she was REALLY old) and I never really got back to it.

I nearly never eat quickie food; but today I neglected to bring lunch, and I had a perverse hankering for a slimeburger, so I dropped by a Wendy's, just to remind myself why I don't eat that crap. While there, it ocurred to me that I had promised to post a picture of an obaw, so I snagged a straw. Here is the humble obaw:

    image

The reed on this one, as you can see, is cut in a truncated Vee. You can get a mellower sound, more suitable for putting in a bottle, by cutting an oval. You may adjust the length of your obaw for pitch; but you can also control pitch to a certain extent with your lips. A carefully cut oval, a practised obaw emboucher, and a small clay or crystal bottle, and you too can be an obaw virtuoso.... After all, the kind of skwauk this thing makes, who can tell the diff?

With a spliff off the right bud, a seven year old playing backup, and a dog to howl, you can feel obawjoyed all afternoon.

With most musical instruments, the player is indicated by adding "ist" to the instrument's name. One who plays piano is known as a pianist; one who play violin is as a violinist; one who plays saxophone as a saxophonist, and so forth. But one who plays the obaw is known as a noynce. "Is that an obawist I hear?" "No, that's a noynce, and I wish he'd stop it."

Man I don't know where to start, I can play the piano, violin, did competition bass drumming for a while, oh and I can play Bagpipes, miss that the most out of everything. Played drum sets, snare and quad back in highschool, also clarinet, and trombone. Still miss bagpipping and going to highland games to compete individually and as a group.

Well, there's a huge difference between which instruments you have and which you actually play, or play well.

I grew up taking piano lessons, and am barely competent at it. During college, I picked up the bass and played in a few bands (highlight: opening for the Violent Femmes).

Gave that up when I became a family man. I'm a "Basement Beethoven" now, using keyboards, sound modules and a Hammond B3 clone to make demos for songs I hope one day will be recorded by people with actual talent.

Oh, and I have four electric guitars, even though I can't play any of 'em. MGAS (Musical Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is just as bad as CAS. Only FAR more expensive.

I play the keys... and the strings. Would love to play more than air drums one day.
