Turns out my cat is a tobacco afficionado. Had some medium English on a paper plate next to me. The cat started eating it. Had some Bat With a Hat drying for my next bowl, he tried to bury it. Picky cat.

I'm glad my Hell Mutt isn't interested in cigars, but she did steal one of the gloves I wear when it's cold outside. I have no idea where she put it.

Started looking into getting into pipe smoking. This may open a can of worms, but I would be open to tobacco recommendations. Looking for three of four starter tobaccos that would be generally available in smaller amounts from local stores. Not necessarily looking for a high nicotine content. I have a small tobacconist near where I go on weekends and would probably go check him out. Thanks in advance...

Don't know if you ever looked at the Pipe Tips for Cigar People thread, much of the information you seek can be found there. The local tobacconist is probably your best bet.

A couple things to think about, the local shops often re-brand. I was in a shop in Nashville, they had a tobacco labeled "Spring Hill" or some such, I asked the tobacconist about it; "This smells exactly like Lane 1-Q?". He looked at me for a minute, and then said "That's because it is Lane 1-Q."

If you're going into the Discount Tobacco stores that primarily sell cigarettes, avoid the big bags of "Pipe Tobacco" that are really just roll your own cigarette tobacco that have been rebranded so as to avoid the insane taxes levied by the authorities.

Many people fall in love with the smell of someone smoking a Cherry blend, in my experience they taste nothing like they smell. Lastly, there's a reason Captain Black is so widely distributed. I like the "Royal", in the blue pouch, probably still have some. Read the Pipe Tips thread, many knowledgeable folks contributed to providing exactly the information you're asking for.

Please elaborate. Know nothing about those old widely available pouch tobacco. They shouldn't suck since they've been around so long is what comes to my mind.

It's been a long time since I was a Capt. Black smoker, started with the white pouch. The OP was asking about readily available and widely distributed pipe tobacco, so this came to mind, as I've seen it everywhere. Is it still everywhere? I don't know. So much has changed in recent years.

All of the Captain's lines were pretty good, IMHO, It's Lane Ltd tobacco. I liked the "Royal", inexpensive and mild gold Cavendish. A little moist, and must have an additive to keep it that way because it stays moist a loo--ong time. There was also a Gold line, similar to the Royal but not so much Cavendish. I think there's a Cherry, too, but I've almost always found Cherry to have a bite. Although, I'd guess it's essentially the same as Lane's Very Cherry, which didn't bite as bad as some others.

I don't know if that helps, but, that's what I know about it.

Oh, and I gave up the White pouch after a while. It was pretty good smoking, but the room note smelled like dirty socks and beer farts. Or maybe that's because I was living in the barracks at the time.

Hope this doesn’t double post. Odd things going on…

I go to a buddy’s house on Lake Winnipesauki in N.H. Seems to be a small legit tobacconist about a half hour away in Laconia.

Certainly did. Smoke taste was nothing like how the tobacco smelled. Very deceiving in a good way. Very enjoyable. Thanks again.

Interesting tobacco. When I opened the tin I thought I would have to set some aside to dry but it was smokable off the bat. Had the smell of maple, to me. Enjoyable. Thanks, Steve.

Unquestionably the weirdest smelling pipe tobacco I've ever encountered. Trying it in the meerschaum because Meer's are said to be less susceptible to ghosting, which makes no sense to me, but there it is.

Vision's of Celephais smells to me like "Fizzies" used to smell when I was a kid. Anyone remember Fizzie's? Tablets dropped into water to turn it into a fizzy drink.

Damned autocorrect elf keeps trying to change fizzies to Lizzies. Little Fokker is drunk again, no doubt.

At any rate, first few puffs aren't as fizzy as I expected. Not as bad as I thought it might be, but still a bit too much bubblegum flavor. I suspect this will not be a regular smoke for me. I'm hoping the bubblegum will fade into the exotic spice promised by the write up, we'll see.
