Not worth it. Gretzky's the greatest player of all time. Ovechkin is the greatest goal scorer of all time. They played in different eras that were way too dissimilar to actually compare.

Ovechkin is a leftwinger and Gretzky was a center. Gretzky played with at least two other Hall of famers the majority of his career, ovechkin maybe nobody? Who knows how many assists ovie would have if he had Mark messier on his wing.

Ovechkin lost almost two full seasons to lockouts and covid, most of those in his prime. I say with confidence that he would have way over a thousand right now otherwise.

Ovechkin has more overtime goals because of the rule changes between eras.

Ovechkin has the most empty net goals in the history of the game. Gretzky is second.

Gretzky has the most short-handed goals in NHL history. Ovechkin rarely played on the penalty kill, primarily because he took a lot of penalties.

Gretzky played in an era where they're an average of a little more than seven goals in an NHL game, every game. OV primarily played in an era where the average goals per game was about five and a half.

There are deep dive statistics, metrics if you will, that compare eras. They look pretty even between the two guys in goal scoring but at the end of the day it's conjecture.

Here is one such comparison, generally considered the industry standard, on adjusted scoring, which accounts for differences in eras. Gretzky's still the all-time great in this as well, though ovechkin has a large lead in goals.

It takes into account the year and a half of lockout time and the half a year of covid time at his regular goal scoring rate before and after. All of the errors are gnulled out to whatever the current era is, which makes sense I suppose, but you could also null it out the other direction if you wanted to. Either way it's still conjecture. Nobody will ever know what ovechkin would have done in the '80s and nobody will ever know what Gretzky would do in today's world.

So what you're saying is that Jordan is the GOAT. Got it!

Regarding the Gretzky/Ovechkin comparison above, I've seen people mention the size of the goalie pads then and now, which is valid. One thing I don't see is the comparison of the old wooden sticks versus the graphite sticks of today. I agree with @VegasFrank that it's impossible to compare eras but just thought it was worth mentioning. It was brought up in a game I watched recently and that was one variable I hadn't heard much talk of at all.

In 1993 Al Iafrate set the then record for 105 slap shot with a wooden stick.

That guy was a freak. Wonder what he could have done with a stick from today, besides break one every time he attempts a shot.
