I regret posting about this. I didn't bother to ask JD if he would mind if I posted about this. I was just kinda ticked off when I first heard about it. I'm thinking it was not my place to open up this can o worms. But, I did. I'm still kinda ticked off. I don't believe anyone was truly offended specifically but I believe they just did it because of spite.
They did it because they could, and would not have to answer for it. Kinda like saying you quit the forum and coming back on under a different login for no other reason then to cause trouble, you know, like attaching themselves like a parasite to my every post and accusing me of belonging to the KKK.
1.I miss JD, he's singlehandedly made me Jones for Vegas gold (seriously I'm smokin one of those suckers)
2.If everyone agreed on everything the world would officially suck
3.I don't know what he/others said and I'm way too lazy to search, good karma to all b/sotls
Gold Vega's are terrible.
And I don't like AF Hemingways. I have found however that the Short Story knockoffs aren't bad.
JD got banned? Hope its just temporary. I like his posts in other areas. Never really pay to much attention to the political forum. But I breeze thru on occasion.
One of the inherent rights of owning a vehicle is the ability to get on ones backside a wrench in one hand and a grease rag in the other, and just tinker to your little hearts desire. Since the vehicle was invented, its been an important facet within the community of gearheads.
General Motors the same company responsible for 87 deaths related to faulty ignition switches, FYI wants to take that right away from you citing safety and security issues. Along with a few other big names.
Its called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Its been around since 2000 and started as anti-Internet piracy legislation. But automakers want to use it to try and make working on your own car illegal. Yes, illegal. The general premise is that unlike cars of the past, todays vehicles are so advanced and use such a large amount of software and coding in their general makeup, altering said code could be dangerous and possibly even malicious.
Listing the vehicle as a mobile computing device, the law would hypothetically protect automakers from pesky owners looking to alter any sort of technology in the vehicle that relates to the onboard computer. Flashing your ECU would be a big no no, which could also lead to all sorts of problems for aftermarket shops.
What GM, and even tractor companies like John Deere, argues is that you, as an owner, dont actually own your car. Rather, youre sort of just borrowing it for an extended amount of time and paying for the rights to use the technology. If it sounds ridiculous it is. But it gets even more ludicrous.
According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, John Deere argued that letting people modify car computer systems will result in them pirating music through the on-board entertainment system.
Thats right pirating music. Through a tractor.
DMCA does give a little bit of leeway, though. While the act could hypothetically lock customers out of key safety features, it would still allow owners the ability to repair other areas of the vehicles onboard computer as they see fit. Its a slim compromise, but one that may be more closely based in reality.
Somebody on this forum is supposedly offended so much by a specific word/name that JD used that they decided to narc on him. Any of you snitches want to fess up? Are you REALLY offended or did you just want to punish him on a technicality? I'm pretty sure it's the latter. I know if you comb through my post you will find some offensive words. Am I next?
I think just being JD is punishment enough for one lifetime
JD got banned for smoking 5 Vegas Gold? Damn, that's a tough room.
Yea and getting tougher every day. With twits like rain it won't be long before every single post has to be cleared by committee before it hits the forum.

Yup, I got banned with out so much as a peep.
Is this for real? Or some kind of word game? Sometimes I have to wonder. One thing's for sure , Im tired of the United States of Perpetual Offended-ness. Good grief, everyone has their panties in a wad these days. Who would have ever thought that a group of cigar smokers would need to be told to man up?

My apologies, I didn't go looking for whatever it was that happened, or didn't. Banned? though, I wondered about, and then reacted.
Still feel the same way, wasn't meaning to aim it at anyone, though,
unless they're offended.

And I don't like AF Hemingways. I have found however that the Short Story knockoffs aren't bad.
The AF Hemingway Maduros are awesome. The regular ones are okay.

Missed this too, I love jd's posts thought he was just busy not posting as much. What do you do to get banned here, how does that work? I mean is this place censored?

Since this is in a debate thread, I'll speak up. You're both wrong! The Fuentes are absolute geniuses when it comes to blending with Cameroon wrapper. Seriously, smoke another one and realize the error of your ways. Lol.

No problem though it would help if I could spell, I was trying to say Between the Lines, which is a rare and is a barber pole wrapped Small preferido. I believe it's the Short Story size otherwise it would be the Best Seller size I think, they can typically be found around the same time when Anejo and seasonal releases happen. Hope that helps

So let's look at this from a different standpoint.
OBD and OBD2, which is the on board diagnostics that all car manufacturer's use for their "base" operating system, is a system that none of the manufacturers have rights to.
How they can use the DMCA to prevent you from accessing it, is beyond me.
And then there is the entertainment systems, which are operated by Android (can you say open source?), Windows or one of several other operating systems, none of which any of the auto manufacurers own and which they themselves do not have rights to.
As for John Deere being involved, WTF? They don't have any claim to the automotive industry.
Add to that they fact that there is NOTHING stopping anyone from wiping their entertainment systems and installing an open source operating system like Linux on it.
The stereo in my service truck is a windows based system, with GPS, bluetooth and wifi.
There is nothing preventing me from formatting it and installing android, linux or anything else on it.
The automotive industry has been trying this for years, since the start of the electronics in cars.
I've spent time dealing with legislature on the Right to Repair Act and it seems like every 5 or so years, someone in the manufacturing tries a different spin on this.
Do you happen to have a link to this article? I'd sure like to send it to a person at Righttorepair.org and see what they think of this.
While the auto manufacturers may be using their influence to push something like this, understand that other large companies, like AutoZone, NAPA, Carquest and every other consumer automotive parts and accessory company will do everything they can to prevent something like this to happen.

Holy crap, I'm in trouble then.
I'm sorry, but this couldn't have been taken care of in PMs? They had to involve Ccom?
They couldn't have PM'd JD and said, "hey that word offends me, could you edit it?"
If this post offends someone, good. This kind of thing is really disappointing.

Ok, cool.

This is one of those areas that being in this industry, I usually get phone calls when something like this is reported and I hadn't heard anything about it.
Edit: Found it.
Wow, you are on top of things, these articles aren't more than a couple days old.
They are using the fact that a vehicle's system is electronic firmware.
But again, this is where the Right to Repair act and DMCA may butt heads.
I'm still confused why John Deere is even discussing this, as their systems in their machines are proprietary and they don't even sell their diagnostic information to govt fleets.
How they are even affected by this is beyond me.
Oh wait, I forgot. There are thousands of rednecks modifying their combines to hotrod them.
Wait. No they're not.
But one thing I suspect, new car sales will drop like a rock.
Do they realize that around 15% of new car sales are to places that modify vehicles for certain needs?
Municipalities, first responders, custom vehicles, etc.
If those places cannot modify the vehicles without infringing, they won't buy them.
I have a meeting next week to discuss new vehicle purchases.
Most our light fleet is Fords, Chevys and Dodge.
Can't wait to bring this up. ROFL!!

this is how you should do it JD, just post your daily rant in here rather than each of them getting their own thread. It would make the NCR area a lot more clean and keep other threads from getting buried before they have a chance to take off. It would give the people who enjoy these threads the chance to comment on the topics and debate in here rather than sprawled all over the place.
