Started cleaning up a couple pieces that look to be gem silica and kicked out a few more stogie stands, the top one had some pyrite on it but when cut has 60-70% shiny gold colored metal.A little dirt never hurt9 -

My grandparents did lapidary work for many years. They are both gone but their basement is full of rocks left over from their work. Ill see what is left and perhaps their is something you could use. I know there were several nice sized chunks of obsidian....Long days and pleasant nights,

Helped an old friend seal up his roof before monsoons hit and he gave me a little project to work on.
Any advice Edward @silvermouse before I do something I regret.A little dirt never hurt5 -
Clean up the insides, looks like it may have been glued, hard to tell, the gravel behind it is good and sharp, the ring in the foreground, not so much. Generally with soft stones a bit of cushion behind it isn't a bad idea if there is room, piece of plastic from a milk jug would work. I would then take a burnisher and open up the bezel a bit 'till the stone fits back in and then burnish the bezel tight to the stone with the burnisher, one of these:

It does look like some glue or something there, the stone was not mounted in this piece as it was a fair amount bigger but have it whittled down where it is close to fitting. Good tip on the backing, have seen where some will back it with some epoxy. Burnisher...ok. Thanks Edward.A little dirt never hurt0

If it has epoxy in the bezel some gentle heat will soften it up for removal. If you do use epoxy again make sure both parts are clean, acetone works well for removing grease 'n glue.1
