Like most threads, they go off track, which is fine.
I know, I know, everyone should smoke what they want, yada, yada, yada... but why are you smoking cigars? Why are you considering cheap/budget sticks? Honest questions... Is money an issue? Do you want to smoke three mediocre cigars in a day for $X or sit down and enjoy one nice stick for that same price? Are you new-ish and still trying to figure out what cigars you like?
Don't get me wrong, there are some very smokeable cigars around for cheap. But the vast, vast majority of cheap cigars are trash, and it seems (to me, at least, who has learned the hard way) that you can waste more money on trying to find a good cheap cigar than if you paid attention to sales and bought great cigars at a good price. I suppose it comes down to how much a person wants to spend per day/week/month and how many sticks they smoke in a day or week.
Great points for sure! I smoke usually 2-3 sticks every day. Been smoking cigars off and on for about 3-4 years I guess. I am not new to buying cigars at all, but I am very new to the auction & bid sites. I definitely know my taste if for medium to full body sticks. But I have found some great cheap smokes, Flor de Oliva, BoneShaker, etc.
I am already testing the waters on the bid sites to see what kind of deals are to be had.

Gran Habano's were once thought of as a good budget stick... One of our great forum members bought a bunch of them when he was starting out and immediately said these are bad. In a private message I was offered them if I wouldn't tell anyone where they came from. Of course I accepted...
I wondered why Bob stopped talking about them...

Advice is never given... it is only offered. It’s what you do with it that counts. There is a wealth of knowledge here, almost endless but you will need to try some or all to see what you like at the price you like. 5ers, Samplers, trades..... all great ways to try new and affordable cigars.

No way Nick, that mi querida is not a budget stick. Even on the auction site, it's five bucks a smoke plus tax and shipping. The padron 2000 and even 3000 is cheaper than that at SB with the promo code and free ship/no tax.
to me for a box of 20, a "budget stick" needs to be at your doorstep for less than a c-note, and preferably way less.

Agree on the suck factor comment. By the time you get those out the door, it's $120+ for a box. That's six bucks a stick. Not a budget stick.

$6 for a quality stick seems like a good deal these days. But I live in CA so that would push that stick to $10

No. There is a big difference between smoking budget sticks and smoking good sticks on a budget. The latter is something that I tend to focus on. I'm smoking much more during this pandemic since I'm home so much so I am doing the same currently and bought about 400 or so sticks in the $1.68-$2.50 price range. Quality sticks on a budget though, not budget sticks. It's not even about money for me. I like finding the deals and it's part of the adventure for me.
The auction places can have deals but it's easy to get out of hand and realize too late that you actually can spend more money buying lots of smaller quantities. The OP has been smoking a while and knows his range of flavors. That makes it easier to hunt for deals. To give you a live example, If I had $100 budget to buy some cigars today, I know exactly what I'd buy to stretch my cigar dollar. I'd hit the monster and add Alec Bradley Connecticut Robusto 5 Pack for the cigars and free shipping and then add six 5-packs of Macanudo Inspirado oranges from the same vendor (on main site) at $12.95 each. Makes it approx $100. I'd use a coupon code to knock $20 off to bring the total to $80. Bam! $2.30 (out the door) per cigar for 35 "budget sticks". There are a few more combinations/offerings that you could group also but I was just giving an example.
Basically, there is no need to smoke lower quality cigars simply because you may have a lower budget. The key is looking around the various online cigar retailers/sales. It takes a little more time but you'll be rewarded when you light up your cigars. Buying a bunch of cheapo cigars is generally not recommended by anyone. We've all done it during our rookie cigar seasons and ended up regretting it. Same with the fancy humidors, lighters, cutters etc (I've wasted $1000's doing all these things). Large weather tight bins and boveda packs coupled with high value cigars (not "low budget sticks") is where it's at. Another good tip is to look for closeouts and older stock (CP has a lot of inexpensive offerings in this category) as there can be some real value there.
Oh and just for the record, there is no shame in having a lower budget than others. Not everyone can burn $20 bills all day, especially for those who smoke daily or multiple times a day. The cigar world can be an enjoyable one on any budget with a bit of cunning, patience, keeping abreast of prices and offerings, and a bit of luck sometimes. Good luck on your acquisitions, may the odds be ever in your favor!

Have you tried the inspirado black? Nice smoke.
Trapped in the People's Communist Republic of Massachusetts.
In that price range, four La Imperiosa Magicos 5-Packs for $80 (after $20 off $100) or six 5-packs for $125 (w/ $30 off $150) would be a better deal IMO. That's a top-notch stick at an incredible value. Truthfully, I expect the Fratello's to be in the blowout bins in a year or so (some cigars you can just tell..lol). There are some deals in that sale though. The RP Super Ligero boxes are tempting but they had them for $59.99 just recently for a weekend spotlight. Calling it a clearance and charging $5 more a box is odd. Still a good deal for a aging cigar. The Corona Firecrackers Sampler looks good also but already sold out.
Not yet, the red is a firecracker though. I have heard good things though. If the right deal comes up on them I will acquire some to be sure. Not having tried the black, the red is my second favorite Macanudo so far, behind the 1968 which is a fantastic cigar IMO. The 1968 also kinda reminds me of the Bolivar Cofradia which I also like.
