Visited Havana back in early 2019 via cruise ship.
Brought back a few bottles of rum, nothing high dollar. A couple boxes of Cohibas as well as some sticks in the humitubes for friends. It was an interesting experience. Downtown Havana is really dilapidated which is a shame because I could tell it was a very beautiful place at one time. And all those old American cars….crazy!
I ask this question with the utmost respect and sincerity: should I be concerned or disappointed that I can’t get cigars from Cuba? Are they markedly better than those from Nicaragua, DR, Ecuador, etc.? These countries make fantastic cigars and I’m wondering what I’m missing not having access to Cubans.
I had several boxes of Cuban's the past, they are gone and I haven't looked to replenishing them. They are In general a lighter cigar than I prefer.
Then there is the legal/illegal aspect, with the IRS having another 80k agents looking for work, forget about it.
Edit:spelling
Once upon a time, they were beyond comparison. Then came Communist Socialism and removed all incentive to do excellent work. Now, many other countries are home to Cuban refugees and their expertise, and their tobacco.
The thing about capitalism is: it works.
As far as I can tell, if you're willing to travel to Cuba and visit the places where the cigars are manufactured and pay the exorbitant prices their government demands, they're still good cigars. Or, maybe go to Spain or somewhere that deals with Cuba. Here in the U.S., your money is better spent on cigars from more reliable sources.

It tends to come down to personal taste. Cuban tobacco has a distinctive flavor that some people enjoy. What do you like to smoke normally?
I like maduros that are medium to strong. Tried the Sancho Panza Double Maduro recently and liked so much, just got a box of 20.

According to José Blanco (who has forgotten more about cigars and tobacco than I will ever know) Cuba has not released a decent cigar since 2003. Blight and then mold destroyed several large crops and they have never recovered since.
There was a time that they were some of the best, that was long ago. The Cuban government needs money desperately so they are rushing everything, from harvesting to rolling, the processing is rushed. Even the quality of the rollers has diminished.
We all desire a bit of forbidden fruit, but unless you like grassy metallic taste from a plugged cigar they just aren’t worth it.
Friends don't let good friends smoke cheap cigars.

Not Cuban tho
He didn't say they were.
I was going to post this in the Herf Archive thread but figured this is a better place to post. Just trying to bring this back on topic.....
I'm confused, or maybe somebody else is. @Vision What exactly did you mean by saying "Not Cuban tho"
I was just saying that the Double Maduro isn't the Cuban Sancho Panza. That's really it. The thread is about Cuban cigars..... I was just being funny that the Maduro is not Cuban tho.

I didn't get the joke. But now I think I do. You (@Vision) were making a joke by pretending to be a Karen and butting in with your knowledge into a conversation that was going just fine without you. Now I get it. Sorry I missed it. Very funny.
I was being a real Karen by assuming you weren't paying enough attention to the conversation to know what the hell was going on.

Actually Bob, it looks like the subject matter had derailed from the original topic, hence the graphic I posted to remind you of the topic.... that's where the intentional Karen came in. Pretty sure there are other topics on which cigars people like..... let me bring up the Merry Memes thread.... nope not there either. I know he was asked what cigar they like and his response was of a New World cigar with a Cuban origin....... in a thread about Cuba. That's the irony in the joke. You didn't take it that way because you didn't want to. That was you becoming Karen. I should have added 😂🤣🙃 and then yowza!, it would have been a real knee slapper.

Those are being taken down as we speak. There will be no more funny business, horse play, jest full ribbings, great googly moogly, or ol' timey banter. This will no longer be allowed and will be immediately followed up with a stern "WTF" reply under your post.

I have trouble with irony. Can you explain that part again please?
@VegasFrank , I guess I shouldn't feel insulted by the politics thread, it seems some people just love to argue, even about inconsequential topics. LOL.
