They played the same Big 10 schedule as Oregon. The non-conference strength of schedule favors Oregon, but Penn State historically plays non-conference patsies, who were patsies while Penn State was unaffiliated. The patsies would have it no other way, because it is their biggest money-making game of the year.
So, disregarding the non-conference schedule, they have the same wins as Oregon, except Ohio State. So, if PSU has no quality wins, the ORE-OSU win, by one point, is Oregon's only quality win?
Indiana played some patsies, too (77-3 vs. Western Illinois; 52-14 vs. Charlotte), but otherwise played a very similar Big 10 schedule as PSU and Oregon, and lost to Ohio State. So, by your reasoning, they have no quality wins either.

@Rdp77 holy crap finishes the championship games. My predictions.
Oregon
Georgia
Boise
AZ State - last bye team
Texas
ND
Ohio State
Tennessee last home game
Penn St
Clemson
SMU - stupid kicker
Indiana
Out - Alabama
Texas crushes Indiana
ND 20 pt win over SMU
Ohio State 10 point win over Clemson
Tennessee smokes fake Penn State
Texas 10 point win over AZ State
Boise last second win against ND
Georgia blows out Ryan Day
Oregon slips by Tennessee
Georgia smokes Boise
Oregon kills Texas
Georgia over Oregon in OT
After Penn States showing tonight against Oregon, do you still think they are fake? I think not. Out-coached, yes, fake and overrated, no.
Overrated? Yes. What quality wins do they have this season to garner a #3 ranking?
8-1 Big 10 record, only loss by one score to then #4 in the country, and loss in the Big 10 championship by one score to #1 team in the country. Name another team with such credentials.
Lol no quality wins. Aller is smalltime in big-time situations. Never beat OSU or Michigan in his career. "One score loss" against both teams was bigger than the score indicated in both. If I were the committee I wouldn't give them a home game. Not over OSU. ND, Texas or Tennessee, all with top 15 wins on resume. 9 is their ceiling for the seeding IMO.
I tend to agree about Allar, he's a decent QB, but seems to shrink under pressure, although coaching plays into the OSU losses. OSU is in Lame Game James' head. He's only played Michigan once as a starter, though.
I disagree about the loss last night. PSU outrushed (292-183), almost doubling Oregon's yards-per-carry, outgained total yards, better 3rd down conversion pct. The difference was the QB, and two turnovers (plus some stupid coaching like going for two when down by one TD, and the deep throw on the last play, with plenty of time on the clock.)

Once again, didn’t answer my question.
What quality win or wins does Penn State have to justify a #3 ranking?
My reasoning about anything has nothing to do with the question. You jumped in and claimed they were not overrated. So….
It’s a pretty simple question.

And Indiana was ranked 11 I believe. Just reinforces the point.

@TRayB Illinois is the only quality win. There were 5 solid teams in the conf this year and you avoided two and beat 1 (Illinois).
Looks like the committee gave Penn State more credit than I did for the score last night. All I saw was a team that was down by 14 or more points for most of the game, up until 3 minutes left. Even during that Penn State drive, it didn't look like they had a real chance, even though they ended up with the ball with a chance to tie.
I hear you about the bad coaching, but if the coaching is the reason that they're not competitive in big games, then you're in trouble. You have a big game coming up with the same coaching staff.

I agree with Illinois as a quality win.
They were down by 18 in the second quarter, and closed it to 4, then again down by 14 after three quarters, and finished by 8, as well as having (as previously mentioned) outperformed Oregon in all offensive categories except passing yards and turnovers.
As to the coaching, yes, I agree, and have stated that previously, along with my preferred solution.

There's apparently a really cool article at this link, but is behind a **** paywall and I'm not going to be subscribing to the Baltimore gazette or the other newspaper that has it.

@VegasFrank this is what you get when participation trophies are handed out to appease conference heads. I hope the committee is enjoying the level of competition of the game last night and the one so far today. I’m just glad there’s an NFL game on too.
