What does/did everyone do for work?

ForMudForMud Posts: 2,336 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm sure there's a thread on this some place, but I figure I'd start a new one....

As for me..... I was a mechanic/driver/operator for a bunch of different construction companies in the local area for many years. In 08 when the bottom fell out of construction, then I fell into construction supply sales and have been there ever since. I knew zero about sales but had a working knowledge of what I was selling. Plus I knew half the guys walking though the door having worked with them at one point or another.
I truly enjoy my job for the first time. Now I don't mind getting up at 4:00 am and getting home at 6:00 pm everyday.
It's a small company only five of us, which makes it nice.
Now I have the gift of gab and I love to bust balls...So I fit right into sales. As my wife puts it "All you do all day is BS with people" She does have a point....But I'm good at BSing :)

So what do the rest of you do or did for a living?

Cigars were made to be smoked, whiskey was made to be drank and women were made to be loved. The only thing I try to age is myself.

Head bean counter for various construction companies on mega-mlllion $ projects. I worked in the field only. I refused to work n the home office because of politics there.

On large projects there is the engineering side of side of the house and the administrative side. Everything administrative was my bailiwick.

Senior Techincal Advisor MAC+ T2 for Apple. I work under the AppleCare umbrella which means if you own an Apple product and call in for tech support you will wind up talking to me if you are a disgusting work that thinks it’s human, or you have a technical issue that others can’t figure out. I love working for Apple as a company as I have never been treated better or been more supported and protected by a company before. That said my specific role I do I personally hate as I am customer facing and deal with the scum of the population in the USA. Not a glamorous job and I often feel embarrassed by how low end my job is, but it supports the family and let’s me have a few very small luxuries.

Local heavy haul truck driver. Wet distillers mostly but I dabble in other bulk commodities like corn, salt, wheat, rock and such. 7 axles on the ground puts me at 95k. It's probably the most fun job I've ever had

Bob is always complaining that you can never get all the glitter out, but it's the price you pay...

As for me, like Brett, I work in Technical Support, but for wireless products instead of Apple products.  I have experienced the joys of technical support for consumer products, along with spending time in the field deploying and resolving issues firsthand, but I've worked my way towards enterprise support lately as a Technical Service Manager so we're working with IT teams of large companies now.  The drawback of that, of course, is that when issues escalate for a behemoth enterprise client, they can escalate all the way up the corporate ladder so the pressure is on to resolve issues quickly.

Talent manager at "The Painted Pony". It used to be called "The White Pony" but supposedly white pony means drugs to cops and they were constantly patting down the girls so that led to multiple odds and ends leftover paint colors splashed on the concrete horse out front, ........and a new sign. We still have trouble with drunk Bronies though. Ugh. Freaks.
Wow. That was a roller coaster from start to finish

I guess it depends on the day of the week or time of day.
I am a heavy equipment mechanic (oh wait, officially a Heavy Equipment Technician 2). Which means I make more money than a regular heavy equipment tech.

I am also a diagnostic trainer and diagnostic program troubleshooter.
Which means, when the other techs have a diagnostic problem they need help with or problem with diagnostic software, I'm the guy they call.

And sometimes, I am a air brake/ABS trainer.

And marine tech help. Meaning when a tech has a problem with a boat they need help with, they call me.

And in between all of that, I handle 150 pieces of equipment.
I am responsible for keeping them running.
I have a regular desk office that I rarely use and a 30,000 lb service truck that is essentially my rolling office. Some have seen the pics of it posted on the forum during some interesting times. LOL!
