The value of money in other countries.

Got a call from a friend for a job today in Malaysia.
He tells me it pays 35,000.........................Rupees.
Damn, sounds pretty good. How long? 2 weeks.
Ok. 2 weeks for 35k, sounds awesome. But anything that sounds too good, usually is and is often a royal pain in the butt.

Then a little switch flips in my head.
Wait. How much is 35,000 Rupees in dollars?
Now he's laughing so hard he can barely talk, he says, it's about $500.
OMG. Really?
Uhm. No.

He mostly called to BS, but had this job come across and had to have a little fun at my expense.

Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy cigars and that's close enough.

Now how long can you live comfortably on 35,000 rupees in that country?

It'd last about a month. The average monthly salary there is $616.

I have here on my cork board a genuine one hundred trillion dollar bill issued by Zimbabwe. Cost me, IIRC, one dollar sixty three cents including postage and lamination, over the innerwebz. How'd it get that way? Zimbabwe gummint spent money it didn't have.

Lucky that could never happen here.

    then there is Venezuela:

"Hyperinflation, set to reach 14,000% this year, has transformed the most basic transactions into Kafkaesque trials. Cash is extremely scarce, card payment networks are overloaded, cell phone coverage is worse than in Syria, and online banking systems constantly crash because of underinvestment. Paying for a cup of coffee can take an hour."

It gave me a pretty good indication of the fact that there are still counties where money is very limited.
$500 for 2 weeks there would be like making $5k here in 2 weeks. Or a month's wages in 2 weeks. If a person we're to live there.
Just the round trip airfare is more than what it's paying.
