I took my Grandson to the range today. He pretty well knew the 4 Fundamental Rules, as I sent a letter to him a few weeks ago, and we discussed them a few times this past week he has been visiting us. We took a Ruger 10/22 (I no longer have a bolt-action 22lr). We discussed range rules and behavior as we drove, and he seemed to grasp things pretty well. We originally tried to set up at the main rifle range, under the long pavilion, but that didn't go well because there were several other shooters there, and the noise of high-powered rifles under the roof intimidated him. We packed up and went to the pistol bays, where pistol-caliber carbines are allowed, and we had a bay to ourselves. I should have gone there from the start.
He did very well with safety items, especially keeping his finger out of the trigger guard until he was ready to shoot, and making sure the gun was clear before going downrange, but he really had no safety lapses at all (but I was reminding him continually of what to do). I loaded a single round for him for at least his first 10-12 shots, then went to 2 rounds, and eventually worked up to a full 10 in the magazine. His first few shots at 15-16 yards were just a bit high, but when he figured out the sight picture, he was consistently in the 10 ring, and a few in the bull's eye. He probably shot 60 rounds total.

To top this day off, my Granddaughter Evelina took her very first steps this evening. Three very wobbly steps before crashing into my arms, but steps nonetheless. We were hoping she would start to walk while she was here, but she was showing zero interest until tonight. They leave for home tomorrow afternoon.

Finished filing my taxes. Did I do them correctly probably not but I think I did.
