To the Nub…

OutdoorsSmoke_21191OutdoorsSmoke_21191 Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭✭✭

My non facetious question is why is there a stigma to smoking a cigar down to the nub? At B&M I often get asked why I smoke a cigar this far instead of ‘just getting another one’. I’ve noticed most people smoke to within an 1-1/2” and toss it. Is this a thing unbeknownst to me? My answer is if I’m buying and smoking a cigar I’m going to smoke the whole damn thing.

A good cigar and the open road solve most problems.

If I'm really enjoying a cigar, right to the nub. If it's meh, about an inch left.

I used to always smoke them to the nub, but now I'm more in the boat of "smoke it while it's good". If I am not enjoying it, whether that be the cigar, or I am just cold and want to go inside. I drop it in the ashtray.

I’ve been smoking most to the nub but I need to find me some tweezers or something to not burn my fingers 🤣

Rodger @First_Warrior makes nice deer antler nubbers. Before I got one from him, I used a straightened paper clip. You need two p.ricks to keep the nub from twisting.

Hey there’s an idea! I can make one of those today! Maybe I’ll have to see if @First_Warrior wants to sell me one of those fancy ones at some point.

You would think these girly fingers would be used to the heat from working in a kitchen for years but nope! They don’t like the heat

This is making me ask how often I use my nubber; more often or less often than when I was newer to cigars? when and why I still use it?

Sometimes, on the vHerf, I use a nubber so Frank won't give me grief for jumping off early, with a cigar I wouldn't necessarily smoke down that far.

Maybe my palate is burned out, or maybe it's becoming more discerning, but it seems like there are fewer cigars these days that need to be nubbed. Even the very good cigars, once they're down to an inch, inch-and-a-quarter, where my fingers can't deal with it, I'm happy to let it die a peaceful death.

How often do you reach for a nubber, and why?

I've cut back on my nubbin' too, when a cigar gets real short, short enough to risk burning my lips I'll often precariously put it in my lips and leave it there and puff away. My lips are thinner than my fingers so don't get burnt, not saying that I have the leather lips of someone like @VegasNickleback but that's what works for me.

I do still reach for my nubber occasionally, when I'm really enjoying a cigar, but that also pre-supposes that I'm sitting in my usual spot next to my humidor box of accessories or in the garage roasting where I keep the nubber from @First_Warrior, if I'm doing yardwork or smoking at the table in the yard I probably won't get up to grab a nubber.

Peter, I bet if you took a week off cigars that your palate would be refreshed, your enjoyment increased, and you might be more likely to reach for the nubber.
