An affluent fad crashes. They don't say what the county is going to do with them.
A spokesperson with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office told KTLA on Monday morning that officials were still counting, but she believed the number of e-bikes surrendered was “close to 1,000.”
“We had nine full truckloads of 26-foot U-Haul trucks,” the spokesperson said.
The event was the O.C. District Attorney’s office first E-Bike and E-Moto Buy Back Program, which took place Sunday at Angel Stadium. Those who brought their vehicles were offered up to $1,000 in gift cards and tickets to an Angels game; surrendered vehicles included e-bikes, pocket bikes, e-Scooters, mopeds, and electric motorcycles.

This is interesting, and a little bewildering. During the years that I lived in Germany I rode a bicycle often. Upon returning to the U.S. I thought I would continue, but it wasn't long until I learned that riding a bike here, at least in Nashville, Indianapolis, or San Antonio was a very dangerous undertaking.
Overseas there were bike lanes, real ones, not like the "designated bike lane" found here. In the U.S. these usually consists of about 6 inches on the side of the road where drivers engrossed in the virtual reality of their tiny screens are blindly zooming by, tossing trash out their vehicle windows at the cyclist. So, it seems that Orange County may be blaming the danger on the cyclist, or the cycle in use, rather than on the real culprits. The real culprits being the lack of designated riding spaces, and the callous ignorance of the general driving public.
It's very sad, I think. As a nation we're generally overweight and under exercised, very concerned with fuel prices and give a lot of lip service to notions of ecological responsibility. Bicycles, E-bikes etc. could potentially help alleviate some of the damage to environment, while simultaneously improving health outcomes on a grand scale.
However, when we see that we might have to educate our abysmally undereducated drivers, and provide space for cyclists and pedestrians without enriching the already overcompensated oil and energy barons, our answer is to destroy the vehicles that could help to at least partially liberate us from their grip.

I agree with all that, Steve; bike lanes need to be designed and placed out of the traffic lanes. They are working on a 2-mile stretch of road near me, reducing it from 4 lanes to 2, with some of the reclaimed space going to bike lanes.
This buyback was for e-bikes and the like, which, around here, have gotten way out of line and abusive to cyclists and pedestrians. Those things need to be regulated, even though nobody will enforce anything.

Massachusetts passed a law this year requiring motorists to pass bikes by 4 feet. Our town.has narrow roads so you have to pull out into the oncoming lane to pass, or wait until there is no oncoming traffic. It is legal to cross double line to do this. Just today I loaded our 2 bicycles into the van to bring them to our meeting house for a fund raising yard sale. It is just too dangerous to use them.

Electric ATC.
Got to rip around on this thing. Incredibly fast and torque was amazing. To top it off, company was able to get it street legal 😳. I put this in this thread because I figured nobody would believe someone built an electric retro ATC. 😬😬

I think it has to do with the “pedal system”. In order for it to be street legal it had to pedal like a bike. Once you engage the throttle the pedals lock up so you can stand and ride.

ok, gotchya. It looked like the pedals didn’t actually move. In the side view it looks like they won’t clear the rear tire.
