Smoking Alone Vs. With People

I was walking back from my B&M tonight and i was thinking about how when i smoke there vs. smoking at home i alone i tend to note focus on the cigar and the flavors like i do when im alone. I can tell i am enjoying the cigar but the specific flavors i dont tend to remember. I might remember one or 2 but not the same as if i was alone. So i was wondering if its me or do you guys notice the same thing?

For me, I notice everything when I'm alone or with one other person at home. Otherwise, I'm too distracted, especially at a B&M.

I'd agree with that. When I'm with other people smoking cigars, the focus goes outward more, on conversation and interaction. Smoking alone is certainly more intimate and contemplative. Both are good though I think, sometimes focusing too much on the cigar takes away from the enjoyment if all you're trying to do is pick it apart.

To me it's kind of like drinking; with others is fine, or by myself, after work, in the morning, during work, before work. Wait, what?!? :-D

I agree, I do tend to notice the various flavor notes of a cigar more if I'm smoking alone. But I do enjoy having a smoking buddy. If i want to review a cigar I'll smoke it alone, of I wanna have a great time I'll call some buddies!

Do you guys find that if you're smoking with friends, you'll smoke a milder or less complex cigar? As opposed to smoking a full-bodied, complex cigar with friends and not noticing all the flavors?

No, I smoke what I want when I want.
Typically when Im smoking with freinds I have more than 1 so I typically pick my cigars to build in profile.
I do prefer to smoke with friends as opposed to alone. Alone is fine, but sometimes I get a little antsy.
With friends its fun to while the time away.
  • I dont mind either way. Alone its usually after work or on the weekend when its not 12 degrees out. But im able to go to my B&M tues and fri since he is open till 8 and we all usually stay later then that. As far as what i choose to smoke with there usually depends ill look around the humi and have been trying to smoke something new. if i enjoy it, ill buy a few more and take them home to smoke another day alone and try to pick out the flavors more.

I'm split right down the middle too. I do enjoy smoking with others, but sometimes I really like to be alone and just relax with acigar, a drink and a good book. or sometimes I just like to hang out with the dogs and space out and enjoy the stick. I think both ways have their benefits.

All of my best smokes have been with company. But to answer your question I do tend to focus less on the cigars nuances thats why I always smoke a new cigar alone or if I feel like doing a review of a cigar I do it alone

I tend to smoke alone do to lack of true cigar smokers in my friend group or the ones that do smoke cigars really dont get it and puff to say they do. I really enjoy and take the time alone as well as review, I have a note book tabbed and well documented experiances. But with others I have learned to smoke a less complex stick as the conversation takes over and getting lost in the cigar is difficult. I consider smoking with my girlfiend as alone (if that makes sense) as she is there 75 percent of the time and asks as well as gets my review of the smoke as I enjoy It. She occationaly will smoke one with me. Which reminds me I have to pick some up for her.

Ya know, I guess I'm the odd man out here. I have no desire whatsoever to find a girl that enjoys cigars.

    hey Kaspera79,

i'm from the bay area (northern california).  my favorite stick is the padron 1926 series maduro. i absolutely love it. i think it's the best balanced peppery, creamy, nougat, hazlenutty, etc stick that i have found.  the only thing is, it's a bit expensive and premium (for me). so i try to make it a 'celebration' stick (i smoke it once a month.  i guess i celebrate alot?)  lately, I'm loving the Diesel shorty and unholy cocktails.  what an amazing spice bomb that things got.

thanks for the invite! looking forward to many more posts

  • damn man finally you log on and post...what's it been, 2 yrs since you started ordering cigars here?

Hays: can we give this Missouri boy a little rookie hazing at the Casino herf?

I prefer smoking cigars with a friend, in this case Jiunn. We tend to order the same thing and try them together cuz it helps have someone to bounce ideas off of in terms of the experience and what you think you taste, and just developing the palate. Plus that way if you both think a cigar sucks, you know it just isnt your bias.

Welcome! btw have you had the 80th maduro? It's in my top 3!

Moving on.. I tend to smoke alone mostly. None of my friends smoke cigars and while my best friend does smoke pipes usually if he's around us and our women are playing risk or killer bunnies so I'll light up a cigar though i don't smoke the really complex or expensive stuff. I find that when I smoke around other people I don't pick up much from the cigar.
