To help prevent this from happening, let the cigar rest for a little while where you plan on smoking it.
If you light it inside and go outside, expect it.
Us in the Pathetic NW are more prone to this problem than most.
The change in humidity from your humi to where you smoke is the biggest reason. That and it's a cammy wrapper.
Letting it sit where you will be smoking for about half an hour to an hour will help.In Fumo Pax

Always keep the band handy. If the wrapper starts splitting just put the band over the split or as close as you can get. You can take it off and rewet the glue with your tongue if you need to. I had onethat split so bad I had to take 2-3 strips of paper and make bands using scotch tape to keep it from exploding. It looked like crap but held together and smoked just fine. But that was an extreme case. Usually just one works fine, just slide it up as you go till the splitting stops or you run out of cigar. I've never lost a cigar because of splitting since I learned this trick 5 years ago.6

I've never had major splits. But I've had it start to unravel from the top when I was first starting out from cutting past the shoulder, still smoked it even after the wrapper fell off. xD
It's one of those cross polination cigars.
