Seeing family history on youtube?

I came across this on youtube.
It was something my father was involved in, in 1962.
He was one of the surviving members of the Coast Guard in this.
I never imagined I would see something like this on Youtube. LOL!

I thought I would share it.

The Columbia River Bar (where the Columbia meets the Pacific) is known as the Graveyard of the Pacific and for good reason.
These servicemen/people who run these rescue boats are not any ordinary people.
I know, I've run large fishing vessels across the bar many times and every time, it gets the adrenyline going.

Great story Tony, glad your pops made it through. Have fished out of Ilwaco many times, never crossed the bar but that river can get plenty rough for several miles upstream.

Yep. I've lived in Washington a few times and I can say this -

ain'tnowayinhell you'd ever get me in a boat that was anywhere near the Columbia River Bar. I've heard too many bad stories about it.

I'm glad your father survived it, Tony. And the fact that he participated is a testament to his courage. To paraphrase Mr. Kipling, "He's a better man than I, Gunga Din".   :o

Very neat find.  The folks that go one on one with the Sea are true heroes in my book.

This subject came up, as it was 57 years ago yesterday and Cape Disappointment USCG Motor Lifeboat Station had a memorial for it.
My father was running one of the boats and was a survivor of the incident.
