I do it all the time. Especially if I'm about to re-light.

I do that, sometimes I'll loosen the ash with my pipe knife before turning the bowl over an ashtray. Like a cigar, some ash will help the burn but too much can be a problem.

Use a tamper often helps keep a bowl going.
