Don't know if you ever looked at the Pipe Tips for Cigar People thread, much of the information you seek can be found there. The local tobacconist is probably your best bet.

A couple things to think about, the local shops often re-brand. I was in a shop in Nashville, they had a tobacco labeled "Spring Hill" or some such, I asked the tobacconist about it; "This smells exactly like Lane 1-Q?". He looked at me for a minute, and then said "That's because it is Lane 1-Q."

If you're going into the Discount Tobacco stores that primarily sell cigarettes, avoid the big bags of "Pipe Tobacco" that are really just roll your own cigarette tobacco that have been rebranded so as to avoid the insane taxes levied by the authorities.

Many people fall in love with the smell of someone smoking a Cherry blend, in my experience they taste nothing like they smell. Lastly, there's a reason Captain Black is so widely distributed. I like the "Royal", in the blue pouch, probably still have some. Read the Pipe Tips thread, many knowledgeable folks contributed to providing exactly the information you're asking for.
